How did the ban come into being in the first place?

They have long had bans people with mental disorders.

I don't think the DSM classifies transgender as a mental disorder anymore.  Much like homosexuality, the societal influences impact the definitions of sickness.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

apparently not to the level where it necessitates prohibiting transgenders from military service  :yeah:

If it's not a disorder, then you can't get insurance to pay for gender reassignment therapy.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

According to a quick google, the only time Aetna (for instance) pays is when the patient has "gender dysphoria" not all cases of identified transgenderism.  Transgender is not considered pathological in all cases, but only when it causes "distress" apparently.

That does make the whole thing rather absurd doesn't it.  People can't have the surgery unless they are "distressed" by not having it.  I suppose in a world where there is 100% love and encouragement toward people getting gender reassignment therapy, they can't actually get their insurance to pay for it.

Think of it this way, now servicemen don't have to sail all the way to the Philippines to fuck chicks with dicks.

If I were a transgender person in the US, I'd want the ban to continue.  So that if in the future they reinstate conscription, I'd be exempt :showoff:

They have age limits as well.  Also by the time they got around to you, I'd be Mad Max outside.  Besides, it'd probably be a pay raise for you.
