I know this isn't stuff anyone can really get into about here, and it's been a really long time since I've looked at or even thought about the specifics of this sort of thing, but I'm curious how it would work around things like temperature layers as a purely surface vessel that is presumably moving around a lot. 

Sonobouys use stuff like extendable hydrophones and such to listen below the layer/rough water noise/boat or airplane noise/etc for submarines.  This wouldn't be able to do that, I wouldn't think, unless....I guess it could have them built in and be able to stop or slow and extend them like a dipping sonar type thing when it needs to? A submersible could just cruise around above and below the layers as needed until it finds something.

Heh, ASVAB...mine said I was super at mechanical stuff (I can change my tire, that's about it)...and much less so at Admin (though still respectable).  I think I rock at admin crap, even it sucks ass.
