Even if Lee had outmanuvered Meade completely and had a day or two unmolested to attack the city he wouldn't have been able to take it. The fortifications were too strong, by '63 he city was surrounded by sixty forts with interlocking fields of fire, garrisoned with 25,000 men with over 800 artillery pieces. Taking Washington by storm was as likely as the Wehrmacht pulling off Operation Sea Lion.

It could be argued that Washington DC would probably be in a state of panic after a defeat at Gettysburg, finding themselves with Lee's ANV camping just outside the city. :hmm:

Lee wouldn't have taken it in "a day or two," but, left undisturbed, he would have taken it in a week or so.  25,000 men and sixty forts is inadequate force compared to the perimeter to be defended, and Washington's defenses were only as strong as their weakest point.

However, the chances Lee would ever be undisturbed for a week or so were nil, unless he had already shattered the AoP (which didn't happen to any army in the East)... and in that case, the war would be over before he needed to take Washington.

It's 1916 and Germany has failed to capture Warsaw.  French forces have seized Stuttgart and overrun the Ruhr valley.  Hannover and Hessia are in imediate danger.  Germany is still wining by a wide margin.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. Seized Berlin in the Spring of 1917.  War still going on.  Guess I will have to capture Vienna as well.

Only Adolph Menjou.
But the only thing he is good for is killing off Kirk Douglas.

Yes.  I can make French generals.  I just drag the recruit general icon on to the flag of France where all the diplomacy stuff is. I don't know why you have this trouble.  There might be a some invisible time limit that arbitrarily keeps you from buying French generals.  Note that I have idea how to promote generals. . I couldn't make Petain a army commander, I could only keep him as a corps commander.

The UI in this game is terrible and the manual and the tutorial are insufficient.  It doesn't help that the game tells you things that aren't true.  Either they were never true or changed in a patch.  For instance it says that once the Americans join you can build American units but you also get free ones landing in France every few months.  I get the free ones, but it never allows you to build any.  Very annoying.

I finally defeated the Central Powers, exactly three years after the war began.  I had to occupy nearly every German cities to get it though, and still it was only a "Major victory", not a decisive one.  The only German cities I didn't take were the areas east of Berlin and the cities in Bavaria (which I bypassed during my Blitzkrieg into Germany).  Interestingly I was able to bypass most of the fortified areas in both Austria and Germany.  The ones in Germany I eventually encircled and reduced (which cost a lot of men), the ones in Austria I just bypassed.  The Italians did not fight any grinding battles, in fact they didn't fight much at all.
