I think it's the same in the US, although I only know it second-hand, as I went to an engineering college but not for an engineering degree.  It's same with actuaries, where you really only need credentials if you're signing an actuarial opinion, although many credentialed actuaries would quietly resent you if you call yourself actuary without a credential.

CC says that's not the case here. My experience is going on two decades ago so it's possible that 1) that's no longer the case, or 2) I was mistaken even at the time. I don't have the confidence to argue either way :D

*edit* that being said I do know that the really pretentious certified engineer wear their stupid ring with too much pride. Even the other engineers think they're assholes
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

Let the western African states that captured and sold the slaves pay reparations. At the source. And it takes care of the transsahara trade too

I'm generally in favor of the free market and the competition that capitalism tends to promise. However, unchecked markets seem to lead to concentration of market power in the hands of a handful corporations who edge out their competitors and generally will be interested in less competition and being as powerful as possible in their niche.

So I believe countries should set boundaries and measures to curb the excesses of the system.

Capitalism rewards whatever makes the most profits and money. If that happens to be competence then it rewards that, but it could just as easily be who is the most corrupt and ruthless. That is why it has to be heavily regulated, to ensure it rewards the right things. Competition has a way of turning into colluding cartels or monopolies.

It is about 99.9% luck; the surest route to wealth is to be born to wealthy parents in a wealthy country. I suppose then the question is to what extent do we wish to help exceedingly fortunate people even more?

Sure. Wealth on that level requires a ton of luck. A ton of it is simply gambling where your capital goes. Or, you know, be born to lucky people.

Theoretically higher skilled workers and wiser managers would receive higher compensation and it would be based on how useful you are. But that only really works in a competitive market.

I don't think it's competence, corruption, or ruthlessness.  It's just the ownership of capital that decides who wins and loses. Hence my reference to trust fund kids.  All you need is the capital to invest in a capitalist economy and you can be basically brain dead and succeed.
