Somewhere out there Josq feels a disturbance in the force.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

But Robert Moses is throwing a party in hell.
"I've never been quite sure what the point of a eunuch is, if truth be told. It seems to me they're only men with the useful bits cut off."
I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

Let's quickly catch up on what my sister is ...

It's interesting how religion frequently ends up as the public face of racism and xenophobia in the US.  A hundred years ago they'd be railing against "Papists" or similar, because they didn't want the filthy Irish, Italians, or Poles coming over en masse.  Now it's Muslims and Hindus, while those other groups are "good immigrants" now.  That wave was driven by a lot of "good immigrants" as well.  I remember a political cartoon from that era in one of my high school history textbooks calling out that very hypocrisy back then.

On the subject of "you have to assimilate into your new country", I have noticed that attitude a lot over the years from European immigrants to the US.  I wonder how much of that is imported with them, as my impression of European countries, British Isles notwithstanding, is that they range from hard on to openly hostile to immigrants who don't do this.  They don't seem to get that the US isn't really supposed to work like that, despite the efforts of some groups here to make it so.

I wonder how different Syt's sister's life would've been if she had married somebody from New York, Washington state, Portland, or you know anywhere outside of Texas and the rest of the deep south

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

The "local" champagne left (plus fellow travellers on the right) keep on trying to import Anglo communautarisme over here, so the situation is not going to improve, I'm afraid.

Norgy

I think in the 1880s Norwegian immigrants were lambasted for their lack of command of the English language and tendency towards sticking together in neighbourhoods. I think the same went for Swedes.

I tried reading some old immigrant newspapers from Minneapolis. Those people were seriously Lutheran. The Norwegian redemption, I think, only came with FDR's look to Norway speech.

The fear people have of Muslims, Sikhs and whatnot is rather irrational, in my opinion. Who the hell cares about someone's religion anymore?
Another thing that irks me is that "Judeo-Bolshevism" and "International Jewry" have been replaced by the "globalist" tag in the extreme right's newspeak. And yes, I do include the GOP at a national level in that moniker as extreme right.

There was a time when globalisation was considered a good thing. Before all capital went out of 1st world industry and into East Asia. Trump can promise to bring back manufacturing as much as he wants, but it will be at dismal wages.

Her husband was born and raised in Pittsburgh.

The idea that they are fine with LEGAL immigration was demonstrated to be false in the last election cycle and the blood libel attacks in the Hatians.

They are anti immigrants and just generally anti-foreign. Xenophobic.

And they also hate most Americans. If you are not one of the 30% or so of the United States they like you are subhumans.

Pittsburgh proper isn't that bad, but there's a reason the areas of southern Pennsylvania west of Philly are derogatorily referred to as "Pennsyltuky".

Poor Kentucky. They don't even have a good basketball program anymore.

Damn NIL and liberal transfer policy.  Don't worry, Trump's Executive Order on college sports will fix everything!

Lulz.  Basically what I think every time I hear someone pining for the "good old days" 5+ years ago in college sports.  I mean, I hate seeing my school's basketball team poached from as much as anyone, but I don't want to force the kinds to stay there either.
