The idea of wearing a t-shirt to celebrate a national day is totally alien to me. 

How would you suggest national days be celebrated?

Make them public holidays.  That's good enough for me.

But wearing a piece of clothing of some sort crosses the line?

I didn't say that, just that the idea has not crossed my mind    In fact I don't have any clothing that carries any message or logos (other than the manufacturers' logos).
