So, are you giving up something for Lent?

For those so religiously inclined, of course?

To me, while I can appreciate the concept, I don't like how some people approach it. To me, giving up stuff for Lent would have to involve something that I would, in general, be prepared to give up for good (so it would be like a "trial run" in ascesy) - and since there is nothing I would be prepared to give up for good, I don't bother with Lent commitments.

What I don't like is when people treat it as a sort of exercise in denial and release - i.e. give up something only so that when Lent is over they are already planning to get back into it, probably with more gusto. To me that's pretty deviant.

Discuss.

Come to think of it I just started a diet on Wednesday.  What a weird coincidence.

I guess I thought Lent was, on a spiritual level, supposed to help you feel want as a way to feel the tragedy of losing Jesus and give you empathy for those less fortunate.  But I have not really heard too many Lent-practicing Christians discuss what the official purpose is.

Neither are Lutherans but they do Lent.

I didn't know that.

I'm not a bloody papist.

You're not an American, either, so that's two strikes against your filthy curling ass.  Protty monarchist.
