My son turns 9 in a couple days: what to buy him?

I'm in a bit of panic: he doesn't like his old Nintendo DS, so I was oriented towards the PSVita, but the new slim version is still very hard to find, even online (remember I'm in Italy).
A store clerk tried to convince me that a small, 7" tablet could be better than a PSVita for games.
the Nvidia Shield is ruled out because too expensive.
What should I buy him?

Take him to the toy store, tell him he has 100euro budget.

That's would be my favourite plan too.

He will already get a tennis racquet from the grandparents and a Lego box (Star Wars' B-Wing :mmm:) from the aunts.

I've found the Vita Slim, he'll get it.

Make him appreciate his old console and give him this. And let him play only this for a month.

Or this.

Thanks, Syt.  Now I'm having a weird mix of nostalgia for Tiger handhelds and a four-armed Harvey Korman chanting in my head.
