Quick, get Roland Emmerich on the case!

No Star Trek for this one.
Just call down to Engineering and have LaForge reverse the polarity.  That always works.

QuoteStill, there is no evidence that a weakened magnetic field would result in a doomsday for Earth.

Why did you waste our time with this Tim?
First of all it's interesting from a scientific perspective, secondly it will probably fuck up our power grids and communication systems.
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

Are you sure about that?  On the surface the magnetic flux density is between 20 and 60 micro Teslas.  So if you had a 10 cm diameter cable wouldn't that generate at most 1.2 millicoloumbs per Km?

For communication systems this would only apply to systems still using copper; optical cable and wireless aren't impacted by magnetic inductance.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

I think you should play the angle that all computer operating systems are in danger of malfunctioning and that everyone needs to upload your patented app to deal with the issue.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

The issue will be solved by a female scientist who looks like a supermodel and her male colleague who is a suspiciously handsome 'nerd' after a series of car chases ending in spectacular unexplained explosions?
And some stirring emotional speeches by all concerned. Perhaps a noble sacrifice or two.
