MadImmortalMan

Open for play tomorrow. I ordered it, so I guess I'll give some opinions later in the week.

Short version: Don't buy it.

Long version: I may give a long version if I can calm down later.  :ultra:

Yeah, it seems to be a rather disappointing release from what I read.

Now, the predecessors weren't exactly stellar at release, either, but the underlying concepts were good and they got patched/modded into something good. I hope this'll happen here, too.

What is wrong with it? The video on steam gives the impression of a modern Elite

A mini-AAR like this makes me hope this thing can be salvaged:

QuoteJust had THE BEST space battle I can remember. I took a mission to destroy the commander of a rival faction who, apparently, was riding around in a capital ship without an escort. I took off an found the ship nearby attacking the station. Many of the local ships were firing on the capital ship.

I fired my nova drones which are like visually guided missles. Once you fire, it switches your view so you are piloting the drone...I drove the bitch right into the left engine..BOOM! Engine on fire and smoking. The ship is actually "listing". I fired my second drone and took out the second engine...now there are sheets of flame shooting from the top rear of the ship.

Apparently, the ship saw me hiding 8km away (fire drones from a long way off) and launched about 10 fighters. I switched to my anti-fighter missles and started dogfighting. I killed about 5 and the friendly station ships got the rest.

I use a missile mod which makes the  "crusher" missles into slow anti cap ship missles. I launched two which hit the cap ship amid ships. The cap ship started firing these hugs ass lasers at the station and smaller flak stuff at me. I started strafing her with my plasma launcher and took out some sort of shield generator and a weapon. After a few minutes, the station fire really took its toll with these big blue plasma ball thingies and i got the warning :

"Enemy ship destroyed...massive explosion imminent...evacuate the area"

So I take off and spin around to watch. The ship goes up...and here is the best part...the explosion took out part of the station! Blue off a whole section. I took a screen shot of the floating wreckage of both. If you blow up a capital ship next to a station , it will take out a chunk of it...and I have no idea of it's repaired

I hope the guy will keep an eye on whether the half-destroyed station will be properly rebuilt by its faction raising demand for given resources in the sector, as it should work in the game.

An X-game coming out buggy, unbalanced and unplayable out of the gate? Color me surprised.

The past ones were fixed down the line after a stream of patches and expansions, I suppose this won't be different. It's pretty damn shitty that Egosoft uses its customers as alpha-testers; if they had to rush this out of the gate due to need of funds they could have used kickstarter or something; they have a pretty devoted community (a bit like battered wives).

Berkut

So this sounds terrible.

But should I consider trying the previous X3 game, since it is supposed to be decent once patched up and all?

Yeah, the last two standalone expansions were good. Mind, this is a game that asks a lot from the player, and not in a "you have to be smart to get it" but in a "there's a lot of boring and repetitive stuff in between the fun parts". I was hoping that Rebirth would follow on the trend of the last X3 expansions and finally deliver an engaging experience throughout, but instead it seems they are back at square one (sigh).

But these are easily the best space trading sims out there, at least until stuff like Star Citizen or the new Elite game show up. The games are stupidly vast; there's something to be said about starting with a lowly fighter and ending up commanding a flotilla of capital ships and engaging in fleet combat; even if 75% of the time will be spent reading a book while your ship ferries cargo back and forth at max time compression.

No. The previous games are soulless. They have identical boxes of space where you set up business and trade lines but ultimately they don`t matter because all the NPC assets are spawned back once destroyed and such. Rebirth corrected this with more immersion and a truly dynamic economy, but apparently fucked up everything else (which were working in the previous games).
