The Minsky Moment

"Does anybody remember Charlie Sheen when he was kind of going crazy...And he was going around, jumping around saying 'Winning, winning, we're winning. Well I kind of feel like that, we are winning. And I'm not on any drugs."

- Rand Paul
The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.

First Maxim - "There are only two amounts, too few and enough."

Rep Yoho of Florida on not raising the debt ceiling: 'I think, personally, it would bring stability to the world markets, since they would be assured that the United States had moved decisively to curb its debt.'

Also: 'you're seeing the tremor before the tsunami here. I'm not going to raise the debt ceiling.' Who uses tsunami as a positive metaphor?

The eternally reliable Michele Bachmann:
QuotePresident Obama waived a ban on arming terrorists in order to allow weapons to go to the Syrian opposition, your listeners, U.S. taxpayers, are now paying to give arms to terrorists including al Qaeda.
...
This happened, and as of today, the United States is willingly, knowingly, intentionally sending arms to terrorists, now what this says to me, I'm a believer in Jesus Christ, as I look at the End Times scripture, this says to me that the leaf is on the fig tree and we are to understand the signs of the times, which is your ministry, we are to understand where we are in God's end time history.
...
Rather than seeing this as a negative, we need to rejoice, Maranatha, come Lord Jesus, His day is at hand. When we see up is down and right is called wrong, when this is happening, we were told this: that these days would be as the days of Noah.

Bachmann: 'We're in God's End Times'
Because Obama is 'sending arms to terrorists'

(Newser) – Michele Bachmann says we're facing "God's end times," and she finds the proof in President Obama's actions in Syria. He recently waived some arms-export rules in order to offer "non-lethal assistance" to the opposition there, according to the National Security Council, the Hill notes. Or, as Bachmann puts it, "the United States is willingly, knowingly, intentionally sending arms to terrorists," she told radio's Understanding the Times in an interview, as noted by Right Wing Watch. "Your listeners, US taxpayers, are now paying to give arms to terrorists, including al-Qaeda."

"As I look at the End Times scripture, this says to me that the leaf is on the fig tree and we are to understand the signs of the times ... we are to understand where we are in God's end times history." But "rather than seeing this as a negative, we need to rejoice," she said. "Maranatha, come Lord Jesus, his day is at hand. When we see up is down and right is called wrong, when this is happening, we were told this—these days would be as the days of Noah."

All the more reason to cull them if they are vandalizing sports arenas as well as giving cows TB.

Too lazy to look through three pages-- has anyone mentioned Hank Johnson?  His Guam thing was a classic.  He tried to follow it up with his helium speech, but it wasn't quite as good.

now I'm just imagining him inhaling from a balloon before squeaking out something about Guam sinking due to global warming in a cartoon voice.
