Crafter versus Artist

Just to shake things up a little, here's a different sort of topic.

How do you differentiate an artist from a crafter? How do you define each of them, and what's the difference between them?

At any rate, Meri, I don't think I ever use the term crafter. If I were to use it, I think I'd use it to describe things like glass blowing, furniture or jewelry making vs. artist for things like painting, drawing, sculpting, etc.

Yeah, I wouldn't use the term "crafter" either (apparantly Meri wanted a gender-neutral form of the word "craftsman"), but that's how I would distinguish it from "artist" in pretty much the same way.

Crafter is commonly used among women who do things like embroidery, sewing, jewelry making, etc. A craftsman, to me, makes a living at their work, whereas a crafter does it as a hobby.
