QuoteSyrian rebels were reportedly using the medieval castle as a base to launch attacks against the Syrian army as well as on a nearby Aliwite village.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has expressed deep shock at news of further destruction to cultural heritage in Syria and calls upon all parties to cease the fighting around this and other historical landmarks. In a statement she explains "destroying the inheritance of the past, which is the legacy for future generations, serves no purpose except that of deepening hatred and despair and it further weaken the foundations for cohesion of Syrian society."

A report from last year also indicated that Crac des Chevaliers was damaged in the fighting between rebels and supporters of the Syrian government.

Well at least it was being put to its original use.
Quote"This is a Russian warship. I propose you lay down arms and surrender to avoid bloodshed & unnecessary victims. Otherwise, you'll be bombed."

Zmiinyi defenders: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

They came for the humans and I said nothing.
They came for the old buildings and I said hey! What's going on!??
Women want me. Men want to be with me.

The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

There's nothing wrong with demolishing old buildings.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

Makes sense.

And they wonder why the British aren't so keen give back the artifacts they excavated during the Imperial period.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

*sigh* Use nukes on the Middle-East already!

Just do like the Koreans did with all the stuff the Japanese razed, rebuild it all with the traditional construction techniques.
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

It looks nice and historical.

Even worse is the more common way in Japan/Korea: rebuild it with concrete.
