2. All opiates carry a risk of addiction. Why some succumb to that risk and others do not is not well understood. Nor is it easy to control.

I'm pretty sure it's down to "do you enjoy the sensations of opiates or not, and do you have nausea as a result of opiates?"

No real way to figure it out without trying opiates, of course.

Perhaps your second sentence explains the simplistic analysis in your first.

I meant each individual will respond differently on those two points.  I have tried oxycodone for pain.  I did not enjoy it at all and stopped taking it after two doses.   My wife also hates oxycodone.  By comparison, my brother loves morphine et al.  Different strokes and all that.

I don't think so.

To use an analogy from other drugs: the examples of alcohol and tobacco.

Some people dislike the effect of alcohol; many others enjoy drinking (I know I do!  :D). However, only a relatively small subset of those who enjoy drinking become alcoholics - addicted to alcohol. A great many drinkers have no problems having a drink or not, as "social drinkers" who have a drink with friends after dinner on Saturday (or whenever) but can leave off whenever they want.

On the other hand - while there are some, there are relatively few "social smokers" who just smoke say after dinner on Saturdays. The majority of people who enjoy smoking and do so from time to time drift into addiction (as I did at one point - got out of it cold turkey).

So obviously, there is more to addiction that simply enjoying the drug. The risk of addiction varies between drugs, among people who enjoy the drug. It has psychological and physical reasons, that are not all that well understood. For example, nicotine addiction is very difficult to break - notoriously so, rated as difficult as heroin - and yet the physical withdrawal symptoms are trivial compared with heroin.

Also, of course, only a small subset of those prescribed opiates for medical reasons (and who enjoy them) become addicts. There is however always a danger that any particular patient may become a victim of those statistics.

Strongest argumnet seems to be that it is four-colour printing with one of the colours faded out.

See a similar discussion for a map of the US states that looks pretty similar :

Yeah, my guess is that the map had other colours on it that have faded over time.

Can somebody give me English slang for somebody that always always follows the rules and is a good citizen, horrified at the thought of breaking the law?

A square. It is never really hip to be square.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

A normie
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.
