Yeah but I did enjoy Warhammer Online which was roughly the same idea, for a while at least. And if you are ever going to play a game like this you should do it close to release before it becomes dominated by uber meta hax0rz seal-clubbing everyone.

I watched a pvp live stream of it, and it seems it is already there.  The losing side - that was being streamed, had lots of comments about people needing to power level up so that their faction could be competitive.

Anyways, got to level 12 last night.

It's decent but I am finding my Warhammer Online comparison to be apt - it's clearly geared towards PVP. Factions (there are 3) controlling territories has a noticeable impact as they can set taxes in towns on activities like trading and crafting and you have access to town supply dumps if your faction controls it. Also as far as I can tell there are no NPC equipment vendors, only the auction house trading post where players sell their stuff (as I understand).

PVE is decent but very standard MMO except that you actually have to aim yourself. I am enjoying the musketeer gameplay I am gunning for - I have a musket and a rapier.

Leveling via XP -which you get for crafting as well not just quests and killing- gives you attribute points, it is quite clearly indicated and explained which attribute affects which equipment. Skills (giving you passive and active abilities to unlock) are per weapon type and you gain proficiency points in them from using them.

I was reading that you get better loot drops than the stuff you can craft -except for high-end crafters- but with my intention to focus on light armor (that gives you bonuses) I haven't reached that stage yet. Apart from the couple of apparels all my armor is self-made basic cloth stuff. To be fair though if I was ok to put on medium and heavy armor I'd be mostly kitted up by dropped loot now, though.

One particular backstory thing I like is that because of this supernatural thing going on on the island, nobody dies, they re-materialise after a bit  Which gives a "plausible" (as far as fantasy goes) reason for PCs and mobs re-appearing all the time from death. Even the mob re-spawn animation supports that little narrative.

Haven't engaged in PVP yet - whether that's going to hold my attention will clearly be deciding how long I'll stick with the game. But for the time being it has cured my World of Tanks addiction, which is definitely a plus.

Still enjoying New World and not sure why... Elder Scrolls Online should be much more up my alley (and to be fair I did clock about 50 hours on that the last couple of years), as it has tons more PVE content and variety. But the overall gameplay loop just seems better and the graphics plus especially the sound effects make New World more compelling to play. the individual areas of the game aren't that innovative or extraordinary (crafting, PVE, haven't really tried PVP except being flagged for it while doing PVP faction missions), but they seem to fit together nicely, giving context and relevance to each other.

Will be interesting to see how the player-run economy they are gunning for will pan out. There are some resources on the trade post (it's like the auction house) where it seems like you can make decent profit, but the price of the more mundane equipment (green weapons especially) has collapsed. I suspect a lot of people ignore the posting fee (and the warning you get when you try to post an item where your asking price is below that) because there's a LOT of 2 gold items and the default posting time (14 days) cost something like 4.8. The sell screen gives you a list of similar items (type and level) so  I guess people just posting to be cheaper than what they see there but they are actually losing money even if they sell it. Especially as you could get something like 0.50 out from just salvaging the bloody thing.

Tonight I'll have to go through the pain of getting into a dungeon team as I want to close off the lvl25 main story arch before going over to the 26+ region.

But, I won't be leaving my current main hangout (Everfall or somesuch) it's a major central hub on the map and it's under my faction's control. Through my various activities I have built a decent zone reputation (a score) and have chosen myself some crafting fee discounts with it. So I have my crafting stockpile in storage there (and you can craft straight out of the local storage which is neat) and will buy my player housing there once I somehow can get the money together for it (so I can teleport back for free).

Coming up on the end of the original campaign in Final Fantasy XIV. The story picks up a fair bit, but from reading spoiler free comments about the last two dungeons ... well, they kinda messed them up and they learned from it for the future. Unfortunately they haven't managed to completely fix them.

In short you have two 8 man dungeons (most dungeons in story are 4-player: tank, healer, 2 dps), with tons of story cutscenes interspersed (like 25 minutes in the first, 30-35 in the second). Because of the system where almost all players do their daily dungeon roulette, you don't have to worry about finding peeps for the group.

However.

Many of them have run those dungeons many times by now. Normally, players are courteous when someone wants to watch cutscenes, but this is a bit much, and experienced players ran through the content, while a first timer was still watching a cutscene. So they made (for these two dungeons only) the cutscenes unskippable, and ramped up the rewards for players coming in through roulette considerably, and now it's a meme. I guess I will see myself, when I run them tomorrow or the day after.

Anyways, I'm one level too low (49, need 50) for them at the moment, so I guess it will be a couple more sidequests, clearing my hunting log, and some optional dungeons I haven't tried yet first (and when I get to 50 I can also do my next class quest).

It's still a pretty and casual affair, and I'm not hit by crippling FOMO for taking it slow. I tend to be a carebear in MMOs, and this game very much caters to that sensibility.

A few months ago as part of the last Steam sale I bought AC: Odyssey and remembered I bought it this past weekend and checked it out.  I actually like it a lot better than AC: Origins so far.

Finished the main base story of FF14 yesterday. Yes, those dungeons sure were a lot of cutscenes.

Loved the lead up to the climax with the plans etc. Keep in mind that in the game you're a mostly silent protagonist. I felt VERY reminded of this: https://youtu.be/4SJOkjxZY9c

The people I ran with clearly knew the place by heart. The fights weren't hard, but man, keeping up was hard.

I'm glad I watched guides beforehand or I would have been super frustrated in the final one. I accidentally aggroed enemies in the first bit (you can fight them, but mostly people just run for an elevator) which led to me dying. So I had to play catch up .. and kinda failed. Fortunately, when the first boss fight starts you can just teleport to it. The second time I fell behind when you have to activate a thing in order to use another thing. This is something every player has to do. I activated the thing, but I must have cancelled shortly before it was done, because when I wanted to use the other thing I couldn't. So elevator back up, do it properly again etc. I did catch up with the rest, fortunately, because they were all stuck in their cutscene. The last boss fights were easy, and the followed 10 or 15 minutes of cutscenes and fifteen or so minutes of credits.

Not the most amazing story ever told, but entertaining enough, with a few small twists near the end. The expansion stories are supposedly where the meat is; I guess I can comment once I get there.

Took me two months and over 160 hours to get to this point, though. I did get sidetracked a lot though. Leveling another class, leveling mining, playing the collectible card game etc. I'm kind of scared of starting crafting, because it's not like e.g. WoW (click button, get product), but a whole process to produce what you want, with ingredient lists of raw and processed goods (themselves created from raw goods) and a skill set to go along with it. Sounds like a crazy rabbit hole (but a great money maker).

So, with FF14 behind me, a review of sorts.

It's with mixed feelings that I stopped, but I think it was time.

The main selling point for FF14 at this point is the story. Many consider the original main campaign a slog, and I agree it has its slow bits, and some serious going back and forth to get exposition dialogue. Also, much of it is text only, and where there's voice acting, it's of decidedly mixed quality. I didn't have issues with it, but YMMV severely. It's high in melodrama and the occasional silliness; it is a JRPG at hear, after all. With the first expansion all of this apparently improves significantly, but you can spend dozens of hours to get there. There are boosts to bypass this, but much of the story builds onto previous content, so it might lead to more confusion.

The community is incredibly friendly and helpful. I didn't run into any toxic behavior, and in fact people can be reported and will be punished if they are dicks or assholes. Generally, if you ask people for help, they will gladly do so, and maybe throw in a random pet or mount just because they feel like it. There are many people who play this very much for the social aspects. Their guild, finding awesome cosmetics, decorating their house or guild hall, playing music in the social hubs, going to nightclubs (yes, those exist), ... kind of reminds me to what MMORPGs could be 15, 20 years ago where the community was as important an aspect as the content. I joined a guild myself, and people were incredibly chill and down to earth, with ages ranging from early 20s to 40s and 60s.

In terms of content there's tons of stuff. There's of course the main scenario quest (MSQ) that advances the main story. There's daily quests in areas where you can farm commendations for one of the three Grand Companies (the militias of the city states). There's beast tribes with daily quests that lead to special mounts and have their own little storylines (each expansion has 3-4 of those tribes). There's gathering, with full skill sets that increase your chances to get better or more resources from each attempt. There's an in depth crafting system. There's tons of mini games in the Gold Saucer casino, from lotteries, to a weekly fashion competition to platforming challenges to a collectible card game to an RTS with your pets and full on Mahjong. There's of course dungeons and trials and raids of increasing difficulty (normal, hard, extreme, ultimate). There's towers with 200 randomized floors to try to ascent through. There's fishing (because of course ... there's something like 400-500 different fish to find and catch). As mentioned there's house decorating (if you're lucky enough to snatch up on of the scarce lots). There's farming for glamour (i.e. transmogs). There's a sightseeing log where you have to be in certain spots at certain times, sometimes executing a certain emote. PvP. Level other classes (every character can learn all classes which you switch between by changing gear). Etc.

The devs have been clear that they expect their players to take breaks and play other games. Their philosophy is that if you feel tired or bored you should step back, play something else for a while and come back when you're ready.

The game is very casual friendly. Story content is generally not too challenging to make sure everyone can experience it. Though tough challenges are available for those seeking them.

The graphics, while showing their age can nevertheless look quite impressive, with some really cool locations throughout the game.

The actual gameplay is ... well, it's also showing its age. You have the classic tab-target combat. Most enemies have some abilities that will show a damage circle or cone on the ground which indicates you should move or take the hit. However, it can feel quite slow. The majority of attack skills are on a 2.5 second global cooldown (GCD). You later get utility skills outside these cooldowns, and some classes have ways to shorten the cooldowns. Additionally, you gain skills rather slowly. I ran my first dungeon at level 15 with 3 or 4 buttons, making it a bit tedious. At level 53 I had maybe 18 or 20 skills as Warrior. Most skills have additional effects besides damage, so it's worth reading too tips. E.g. as pugilist/monk I have a base skill, which allows me two use one of two follow ups which lead into two other follow ups. In rotation I would alternate, first using the skill that gives me extra damage for 15 seconds, then the one that deals damage over time (if fighting a boss, e.g.), and then the combo that gives most direct damage. On top, Monk skills deal bonus damage if dealt from flank or read depending on particular button. So a slow skill progression helps to learn these intricacies and how to string them together for best effect. At the end of the day it feels more varied and interesting than, say, SWTOR, but less immediate than ESO's combat which is more action based, but uses fewer skills.

Dungeons are a mixed bag. The original dungeons showed some ambition towards making them a bit larger and maze-like, but this was later abandoned. After the original main campaign, dungeons are usually a run from A to B, with a few trash mobs in between, and usually around 3 boss fights. Even optional dungeons generally have story and lore attached to them. And around level 50 I found that generally there'll be a gimmick or two about them. E.g. in one case you have an invulnerable boss stalk you through the level, and you can only avoid his damage by standing next to glowing crystals. When you fight the boss, it's invincible unless the tank brings it to the same such crystals in the arena. Other dungeons require you to activate things, collect things, avoid things, or - in boss fights - figure out how to avoid certain damage bursts. That can be jumping into one of the hovering water bubbles to avoid arena wide AOE, or preventing certain adds from reaching a target. All this is quite manageable in normal and hard difficulty, but becomes a lot harder in extreme and ultimate challenges where bosses get new mechanics and phases. I've seen Yourtubers compare this to WoW raids, and a comment was that while WoW feels faster (because of FF14's global cooldowns), it still feels challenging, but more like a dance.

Finding groups for dungeons isn't hard. Many players run "duty roulette" which slots them in dungeons seeking players (or assigns them randomly). There's little communication during a dungeon run, unless something funny happens, or someone needs help with the mechanics. If someone watches the cutscenes, people will generally wait for them to finish before moving on. If you end up running a dungeon for which you're oveleveled you'll get synced down - which also means you lose all skills you wouldn't have at the dungeons's level, which is a bit rough.

Ultimately, I didn't enjoy the dungeons. Some of them look quite cool, but I didn't find the gameplay much fun. I thought it was because I was playing tank. As tank you set the pace (usually that means first checking how many enemies you can pull while mitigating damage and the healer keeping up). But most of the time you tank the boss, avoid floor markers, and leave the rest of the mechanics to the DPS members of the group. I hear late dungeons demand a bit more from tanks, but it's considered one of the easiest roles, esp. since their aggro retention got buffed a lot (basically, any player must do >10x your damage). I did play my monk in dungeons, too, though (as it's an efficient way for leveling a second class), and while I felt I had more to do, I also felt more "along for the ride". It felt mostly tedious, and not much fun. YMMV, a lot of players seem to enjoy the dungeons for the visuals, story and music (esp. in later expansions), but on low levels I felt it was mostly tedious. Granted, my not liking to rely on others in games, or have them rely on me, probably is also a factor there. I picked up a bunch of dungeons at the end of the original main campaign, and I ran them quite begrudgingly. It's hard to pinpoint really. But running a few maps in POE can take as long as a dungeon in FF14, and I find the former much more engaging.

At the end of the day, I loved the world and story, and I liked the wholesome community (even though I prefer to not interact ). But the gameplay became grating. I found myself avoiding combat (if you switch to gatherer profession, mobs don't aggro on you, unless you're way below them in level), similar to SWTOR, and that's generally a bad sign. I think it comes down to the game systems overall feeling relatively casual. There's lots to do, but it's not demanding particularly much of you. If you're looking for something to while away time, this may be brilliant. There is a lot of content, and you can just chill out with it. And while I do often play games on low difficulties, the good points weren't enough to keep me p(l)aying. If I was a more socially minded person, I might have stayed on for those aspects, but as it is I have plenty RPGs (including Final Fantasy 1-15) that I can play without a monthly sub.

That said, the trial is very generous - you can play the entire base game, plus the first expansion entirely for free, which can keep you busy for 100+ hours, depending on how much side content you want to do. You can't join guilds or answer whispers, but that shouldn't be an issue, generally.

The car list for Forza Horizon 5 at launch (491, if Excel doesn't lie). FH4 launched with ~450 cars, and had ~750 at the end, so I would expect a similar increase for the new game.

Bit disappointed at the lack of Fiat/Abarth, Lancia, Alfa Romeo from the Italian side. Ford maybe a bit overrepresented? Also going to miss the James Bond cars. Cruising in a 2CV was awesome.

Also still hoping they'll add Rolls Royce at some point (just for fun), but if they're not even in FH4 which was set in the UK ...
