Yeah, but what you're advocating means without a meaningful energy strategy, cheap oil runs out within a half-generation and so Americans will have to adopt to alternative modes of transport, principally electric cars. 

ie during your lifetime the V6/V8 will all but die out in cars.

Incidentally one other thing I noticed in these energy stats, during 2009 was the first year China overtook the US in primary energy consumption from all sources.

And in 2010 consumption as a percentage of world total is 20.3% and 19% for USA.
