Quote from: PJL on Today at 08:06:35 AMI personally would be fine with the EU going global with like minded democracies joining. Like Canada, Australia, Japan, S Korea etc.

But that would necessarily be without any security agreements, still a more open trade network amongst free countries would be a positive 'light' to the rest of the world.

A common currency might be difficult, but a more integrated trading bloc to counter American aggression would be a smart idea.

That's what MAGA embraced in February 2022 and hasn't let go since.

An interview with the Energy and Natural Resources Minister (who coincidentally is the MP from my riding).  Interesting comments on where he sees longer term trade relations with the US.  Basically, in his view, we are never going back to the sort of relationship we had three months ago.  We will continue to trade with the US to some extent given the geographical realities.  But we will also put a lot of effort into diversifying our trade.

Also, interesting points about just how dependent the US is on our resources.

Add this to the list of things I hate about Trump.

We have a lot of serious gripes about Justin Trudeau!  Certainly including the fact he suspended Parliament just so the Liberal Party could have a leadership race.  Just when all of this US tariff nonsense is going down, none of it is being discussed in Parliament.

"Dictatorship" is too strong, but democratic it aint.

Yet thanks to Trump suddenly the Liberals have jumped 20 points in the polls.  Yeah, thanks Trump.

The Conservatives picked an odd time, and an odd opponent for a fight.  At the same time Ford was telling the citizens of Ontario that he will give aid to workers impacted by the tariffs, PP was saying that politicians should not "dishonestly" take advantage of the crises to increase spending.

I think I was right, the guy is a one trick pony.  I would have thought he learned from Harper about what to do in an economic crisis caused by external factors.

No, the Liberals were always going to go up in the polls after jettisoning Trudeau.  And PP has only himself to blame for using Trumpist rhetoric when he thought it was ok to, as you put it, play footsie with fascists.

Those of you on the right who thought that that was ok, can now contemplate just how wrong you were.  PP is never going to be able to wash that stench from him.  There are way too many recent video clips of him being Trump lite.

So Ford is apparently putting a 25% export tariff on electricity exports to three US states:
QuoteOntario Premier Doug Ford tells CNN that the province will place a 25 per cent tariff on the electricity that it provides to 1.5 million homes and businesses in New York, Michigan and Minnesota as of Monday.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/toronto/article/doug-ford-says-ontario-will-go-ahead-with-25-per-cent-tax-on-electricity-it-provides-to-the-us-on-monday/

So from Yi I understand that this will drive down the revenue for Ontario due to a lowering of demand in those states.

It will be interesting to see whether the revenue resulting from the drop in demand will have a value greater than the money collected from the tariff.

It'll also be interesting to see what additional knock on effects and repercussions it will have.

So for import tariffs the customers pay the tariff, who pays the export tariffs?

*edit* shame they didn't (couldn't?) cut them off entirely. During a cold snap would be ideal.

Make the export tariff rate dependant on temperature?

Quote"Trudeau says call with Trump was 'colourful' and warns trade war will continue for 'foreseeable future'"

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday that his phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump was "colourful" with moments of tension as the two hashed out how to bring the American-led trade war to an end.

Trudeau said negotiations are underway to secure some form of tariff relief for certain sectors, but warned there's no sign that Trump is willing to drop his levies entirely and it's likely a trade dispute will continue "for the foreseeable future."

Trudeau said there are ongoing discussions to have all of the tariffs dropped until April 2, when Trump is expected to impose another layer of retaliatory tariffs on all countries he claims are ripping off the U.S. But those talks have not been finalized and Trudeau said he was reluctant to comment until there is something concrete to announce.

The prime minister acknowledged that the 50-minute conversation between the two men on Wednesday was heated, but said it was a "substantive" call and that there could be a resolution to these issues, at least in the short term.

But Trudeau said over the longer term, Trump seems committed to tariffs.

"We will continue to be in a trade war that was launched for the U.S. for the foreseeable future," he said.
