I'm going to assume a few things, you don't have to accept them for the purpose of this thread or any scenario you outline. But one I do suggest we go with is that Trump loses, as the polls and many level thinking people now suggest.

I think and several others on Languish also worry that the populist genie is in the air, unleashed by Trump's crude campaign, so how do you see it playing a role in the 2020 elections?

I'd be surprised if a more strategic thinking politician doesn't takes what he's seen in the Trump campaign, knocks off the unnecessarily vile aspects and forges a platform that could also in part appeal to significant number of the American middle/upper middle classes.

Will there be one or more openly populist candidates, who might they be and how will the campaign roll?

My own scenario sees Clinton winning handsomely, the GOP losing the Senate and with the House finely divided, but the republicans rebounding in congress and managing to frustrate quite a bit of her domestic program.

I could see Clinton embarking on another foreign military involvement, possible early on to disavow that she's weak on the world stage, quite possible no fly-zones and a small but scary shooting conflict/incidents with the Russians over Syria.

Ironically I don't think she'll have the stamina to run for a second term, so short of deciding to bury herself in office, I could foresee Bill persuading her to withdraw, but actively backing an apparently 'progressive' candidate in 2020.

I'm guessing the GOP, might decided to properly embrace 'considered populism' and find who? Someone who can whip up crowds, but also string together several sentences on a single theme.

Who might this younger charismatic person might be, I've no idea. Most of the Republican candidates from 2020 now look like tired old men?

Problem is mongers, they have only been able to stir up the racist, bigots, and religious looney tunes. Their message is only sane to those folks.

It's never too early.

This election has shown that combining cultural conservatism with protectionism, isolationism, and (at least) a lack of aversion to social welfare policies is a potentially winning combination. However, it has also shown that you need to have the support of/hijack a major party to be taken seriously as a national politician (Johnson/Weld was doing poorly even before a leppo), and both parties will probably exert more control over their primary election processes in the future.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
