QuoteA Norwegian Heavy Metal Musician Accidentally Became a Local Politician

His campaign was just a picture of him and his cat

Politics is often about popularity, and there's no denying that Gylve Fenris Nagell — better known as Fenriz of the Norwegian death-metal duo Darkthrone — is immensely popular. So popular, in fact, that he was elected into public office in his hometown despite asking people not to vote for him.

In an interview with music-news website CLRVYNT, Fenriz detailed how he accepted a request to be on a "backup list" of representatives for Kolbotn, a tiny town in southern Norway populated by a few thousand people. His campaign, he says, was just a picture of him holding his cat with the caption: "Please don't vote for me."

"But people just went nuts," he told CLRVYNT. "After the election, the boss called me and told me I was a representative. I wasn't too pleased."

The 44-year-old front man can't back out of his newly acquired public office, however.

"If you get voted in, you have to stay in that position for four years," he explained. "But I'm used to these sort of long-term commitments."

Monoriu

There was a widely despised pro-Beijing politician in Hong Kong.  He has been elected as a district councilor for a few decades.  He has tons of money and can afford to hire an army of assistants, open lots of offices to solve people's problems.  But he also has a habit of saying somewhat questionable things to the extent that people begin to question his basic literacy.  Hard to believe, I know, but it is true.  Anyway, he was up for re-election last year, and everybody thought he would win without the need to do anything.  None of the pan-democratic parties sent anybody to oppose him.

A complete no-name and political novice, at the last minute, decided to sign up for the election.  He has no background, no experience, no ground structure, no name recognition, no campaign to speak of, no money, no endorsements, nada, nothing.  It is like an average Joe just decide to go up against somebody like John McCain in the US Senate race.  All he did was to provide an alternative name on the ballot.  And he won.  Handily.

I bet it was the cat the one that clinched the election race for him.

It would have been a much more interesting story if he actually became the whole town council, as the thread title suggests. :P

I still love the story of that Italian porn star, La Cicollina, or somehting, who was elected to the Italian parliament.

Thread title fail.  There was nothing "accidental" about his election, either.

Compared to Timmay's thread titles, though, Syt effectively wrote the Iliad.
