Edit: Also - I don't think it's appropriate to call that love.

Let us ask the Brain, our expert in that matter.

The Brain

Sheep make you smile through the pouring rain.
Women want me. Men want to be with me.

But also, as I intimated a while back in another thread...I think when asked this question in a poll, the responsdant is far more likely to have in mind their beloved family pet when answering the question, and answer with that bias, not the hamburger they had for lunch, or the llama they passed in the field while commuting to work.

And as Tyr proved/answered...the beloved family pet is often thought to be worth far more than the life of most of one's neighbors.  :P

Incidentally the alpaca is still alive - but Geronimo's owner is now selling Geronimo themed merch

QuoteThat's a stereotype about the Welsh (if you're English or Welsh) or Aberdonians (if you're Scottish)! :P
These days I think you tend to hear Welsh (or Nzer) more but traditionally I always heard it as Yorkshire.

Yeah. I think there's a lot of nuance in it which the simple question doesn't show.
Which humans, which animals. It matters.
Also it could just be skeptical paranoid me but I get vibes from it that answering humans are worth more means animals aren't worth shit.
It would be more interesting to see it done on a less absolute sliding scale

I don't think there's much of a sliding scale to say human lives are worth more than animals

I mean yeah there could be individual cases - Hitler v your childhood pet. But as a general principle it doesn't seem that tough and doesn't rule out believing in animal protection//rights.

There's absolutely a sliding scale.
Human life is ultra important and do whatever the fuck you like to any animal vs human life is more important but animals are only a notch behind and cruelty to animals should be treat seriously.

FFS :bleeding:

I hate to sound like a male, Tory voting pensioner - but get a grip :bleeding:

And - frankly - given that nowhere near 40% of this country is vegetarian or vegan people need to take a long hard look at their dining habits if they think humans and animals are worth the same.

So 3 in 10 people in the UK are in the same moral place as cannibals....interesting  :hmm:

So can we now say that Soylent Green is a feel-good movie? :hmm:

So Pen Farthing and his 200 cats and dogs got out in one of the last flights. Apparently he didn't get his Afghan volunteers out. On the one hand I think animal rescue workers are probably quite low risk from the Taliban, but it's still despicable.

Hard to disagree with the various "government sources" on this:
QuoteTim Shipman
@ShippersUnbound
Let's put it this way, I've heard more vitriol from within government about the ridiculous Pen Farthing and his travelling circus this week than I have about the Taliban

And Michael Deacon collecting comments journalists were told today:

On that last point it's true and why I'd challenge the point around this being disdain for non-white people, because I think British people have plenty of disdain for other Brits v animals. From a Jonn Elledge piece recently the six largest domestic violence charities in this country collectively have an income of £17 million; a single donkey santuary in Devon has an annual income of £20 million. My understanding is that isn't even that unusual - that donkey sanctuaries generally have more money than they know what to do with - needless to say that's not true for other charities <_<

Edit: And what annoys me even more is that I am certain that in about ten years time this story will be made into a feel-good, heart-warming film about a man trying to save his rescue animals. Probably with some snooty general, or Whitehall MoD Tory in a pinstripe as the baddy :bleeding:

Did the animal rescue impede human rescue efforts?

One guy and his two hundred animals got waved into the airport when there's clearly lots of people - who'd I'd argue are more at risk - waiting outside. Also from my understanding the public raised the funds for a charter and so their view was that it wasn't impacting anyone because they had theyir own plane. But that ignores the amount of official time by FCDO and MoD officials to coordinate the rescue with Pen Farthing (which I think could have been better spent) and from what I understand the real issue isn't the number of planes but getting them fueled, supported by ground crew and there are limited slots to take off - one of those slots was taken by a plane with Pen and his two hundred animals.
