I don't have any idea what use we can derive from these economic centres of gravity.

It seems it would be more descriptive if they took average latitude and average longitude instead of this combo that balances through the poles.

I, for one, am glad that the centre of economic gravity is not longer in the middle of the North Atlantic.  It was far too vulnerable to U-boat strikes in the 1940s, and later the Backfires could have taken it out.  Sure it is in the middle of Soviet Kleptostan now, but they are too dumb to do anything to it there.

I'm guessing it uses GDP as "pull", so stronger countries pull the center in their direction. I guess it's somewhat useful to see shifts in regional economic power over time, like the US dominating in 1950, but China creating a new, very powerful vortex. Also, it seems there shifts appear to happen much faster.

Angus Maddison did pretty good work on the GDP of the world through history. Wonder if they're just using his data.

I seriously doubt you can do any better than educated wild guessing at something like that. I mean even today the grey and black economies are more or less out of the GDP statistics and that's with some crazy-efficient book-keeping compared to the rest of history.
