Is it all personal debt for nonperforming assets like homes and cars or is there some structure in those countries that makes it common practice to take on personal debt for investing reasons?

I think it's mostly homes, a lot of that debt increased during the bubble pre-2006ish where everybody suddenly found themselves with fictional millions to spend as they saw fit. Also means there's a lot of technically insolvent homeowners today.
