OTTAWA — Canadian police and intelligence agencies have made two arrests in connection with a planned major terrorist attack to derail a Via Rail passenger train in the Greater Toronto Area. Two suspects are in custody, one arrested in Toronto and one in Montreal, following an RCMP counter-terrorism investigation.
At an afternoon news conference, the RCMP named the suspects as Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35, neither of whom are Canadian citizens, and said they were linked to al-Qaeda.
RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said that while the suspects had the capacity and intent to carry out an attack, there was no imminent threat to the general public, rail employees, train passengers or infrastructure.
"Charges include conspiring to carry out an attack against, and conspiring to murder persons unknown for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group," reads the RCMP's statement.
CBC News reported Monday the alleged plotters were reportedly under surveillance in Quebec and southern Ontario for more than a year.
The investigation that led to the arrests stemmed from a co-operative effort involving law enforcement agencies in Canada, the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which collaborated in what the RCMP called Project SMOOTH.
Fuck yeah, Canada. :smoke:

I can hardly wait until Trudeau tells us we have to understand the root causes of why these people felt marginalized.

Bush's fault
Interesting. Apparently al-Qaeda guidance from 'elements in Iran'.
From what I've heard seems like one of those weird stings where undercover cops go "you should so blew up that train" and when the suspects agree they're arrested.
In any regards at least a potential thread is off the street. Go Canada.

Apparently Parliament Square's closed because of a suspect package. Probably nothing, I wouldn't have posted a new thread for it but it seems to fit in here.

He must have checked out the post-academic job market. :hmm:
Interestingly, they are posting in the news that these guys came on the police radar because an Imam reported them to the cops as lunatic radicals.

According to news reports it is not all that uncommon for Imam's to assist police in this country.

Yeah, these are lam,e. DOn't count.
I think we can call off the Liberal party inquiry into "root causes".
QuoteMr. Esseghaier, a stocky figure with a thick beard and glasses, was soft-spoken and polite during his appearance, and declined the services of an Arabic translator. He did not appear with a lawyer, and was represented by a duty counsel.
When addressed, Mr. Esseghaier said "I wish to have one comment," to which the Justice of Peace warned him to "be careful what you say."
Mr. Esseghaier stood, then calmly said to the court that he does not recognize Canada's Criminal Code. "First of all, my comment is the following because all of those conclusions was taken out based on Criminal code," he said. "All of us we know that this Criminal Code is not holy book, it's just written by set of creations and the creations they're not perfect because only the creator is perfect so if we are basing our judgment ... we cannot rely on the conclusions taken out from these judgements."
Great. An islamic de-taxer.
