Title: 4x
Post by: PDH on April 16, 2013, 09:10:40 PM
God I wish there was a 4x space game that had a soul.

That is all.

Endless Universe isn't that bad.

I like Endless Space, GalCiv2 with expansions and Distant Worlds. Haven't spent much time with Star Drive.

MoO2 was fun at the time, but eventually too easy and unbalanced (cyborg+telepathic = unbeatable).

Check out Stardrive yet?   Pretty good game and the customization of ships is pretty neat that most of you would get lost in it and only do that.

Has an open beta if you buy it, release date is officially the 26th.  One man project, pretty impressive.

That looked interesting until the first three words of the first "feature" bullet point.

stardrive is pretty fun, and the beta is patched frequently.

Stardrive looks like a simplified Distant Worlds, which is a good thing. I think I'll have a go at it once it's a bit more polished up. The race customization and ship designing aspects intrigue me.

The coolest thing in this game is the ship customization.

But does it have the IT factor?  I remember MOO3 being cool but empty, GalCiv was sort of the same for me.  Sure MOO2 became the same thing over and over, but that was when I had played it to death.

Maybe I was younger then, or dumber.  But nothing in the genre has grabbed me in a while.

I got Star Drive, but haven't done much with it lately...I thought my graphics card was pretty good (though it is a built-in on the mobo), but SD runs pretty damn slow on my CPU.

And it cannot be that my processors/memory are that old yet.  :(

Stardrive is pretty good.  Still needs some work though.  I've seen someone saying there will be a big patch when the game gets officially released, so that'll be cool.  I think it was in the SA thread, which zero posts in, so hey maybe he was the one who said that. vOv
Title: Re: 4x
Post by: PDH on April 20, 2013, 07:46:24 PM
I hope there will be a big patch.

Good -
It draws from MOO2 in a loving way.
The races are archetypes and that is what it should be.
The ship customization is quite good, it can take a nice long time to make a new ship - though there are plenty of "ok" ships of each class to choose from if one doesn't like this.
It is easy enough to jump into, complex enough that one learns things even after a few long play throughs.
Space combat is not just move from square to square, but pseudo-inertial movement where your ships take maddeningly long times to turn around.
Real time is not bad, a pause (like the EU games) lets you do your orders or whatever else.

Bad -
AI is stinky, at best.  Sure, the other races colonize and research, but it seems like they sort of cheat.  By the mid game of normal level they are running quite a bit behind.
Documentation even with the help is...sparse.  Sure, with enough sorting one can figure out how to send marines down from orbit, but that takes a long while of searching and fumbling around.
Why are galaxies always flat?
The other races are too...programmed.  Some always fight, some always will at least try for peace.
Science is too easy after a time - once an empire gets running it is just bam, bam, bam - new discovery.

Other than that, there are a few glitches as expected in beta, and a lot of polishing left to do.  I for one never so much cared about how a ship looked as what I could cram on it, and this game is for that kind of person.  It seems as if there isn't too much "blam - you're dead" stuff here, rather a lot of incremental stuff in the science (arms) arena.  A bunch of mid-level ships can take down a high end ship, for instance.

We will see after the full release happens.  For now, it was worth MY money.

One of the things is that the different races only build ships that are the generic versions or you have designed.  Not sure if hes made it so you can download other people's databases, yet.

Mine too. I downloaded it on friday evening and started up a game. When next time I looked up from the computer 15 hours had passed and it was the day after. Addictive gameplay indeed.,

Like I said, this is really impressive for a one man show.

he fucked over EVERYONE who preordered in Desura. He moved to Steam, and since he didnt bother to take note of who purchased over at Desura, he decided he cant hand out Steam keys to them, but alas, has stopped updating the Desura copy of the game. OOOPS!

Just to note - the "release" version is still a bit buggy.  It seems to be late beta, really.

One thing I've noticed is my repair drones don't seem to be functioning anymore.  I had a busted up frigate that wasn't able to repair itself, couldn't move, etc, so I sent a couple of those supply ships with four supply shuttle bays and two repair drone launchers each (and later a couple of "custom designs" with nothing but repair drone launchers), but they didn't do anything once they got there.  Just orbited around it, and launched supply shuttles when it needed ammo for me taking command of it and making it fire off a few rounds.

The frigate can't move to be scrapped, the repair ships won't repair, sooo...it just sits there.  Kind of annoying.

A race with negative diplomacy had better build up a nice fleet (likely since it's early game, fighters), otherwise everyone will want to piss on your Wheaties.

Played this a bit last night. Solid purchase, I like it. The diplomacy has a very Star Control vibe with the music and the aliens being colorful in that Starcon2 way. The little owl dudes are like the ZoqFotPik and the cyber guys are like the Mycon.

I can't turn the firing radius of my guns in the designs. Did somebody mention that? Maybe there's something I missed.

Click on the gun, then click and drag in the middle of its arc.  If it's a spinal mounted weapon (railguns or heavy mounted beam lasers, for example), you can't turn it.  Sometimes it can be a little touchy when it comes to where you click and drag.

As MbM said click on it a second time (I always try to hit the upper left corner) then click and drag after move out from the weapon a bit - it seems easier and less touchy to get the arc to move if you are beyond the original weapon.

-edit after I was home and checked how it was done...

How do carriers decide what kind of fighter to stock up with? Can I force them to use a particular design?
