QuoteWith no debate, Republicans at the party's spring meeting here on Friday unanimously approved a number of resolutions, including one that reaffirmed the party's opposition to same-sex marriage.
"The Republican National Committee affirms its support for marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and as the optimum environment in which to raise healthy children for the future of America," the resolution read. The 157 RNC members present approved it in a voice vote.
The vote on same-sex nuptials was part of an effort to dispel criticism from social conservatives worried that the party may veer from its official position on the issue.
Before the meeting, some outraged social conservative leaders accused the party of taking steps to abandon its opposition to same-sex marriage, after the so-called Growth and Opportunity Project report outlining steps for the party to broaden its reach called for being more inclusive to gay and lesbian voters. Thirteen prominent heads of social conservative groups sent a letter to RNC Chairman Reince Preibus this week, threatening to abandon the party if it veered from "conservative principles."
Two Senate Republicans, Rob Portman of Ohio and Mark Kirk of Illinois, have declared their support for same-sex marriage, as have all but three Democrats in the chamber. Public opinion polls suggest that Americans, especially young voters, increasily support extending marriage rights to same-sex couples.
The RNC also unanimously approved a separate resolution to support the "core values" within the official platform passed at the Republican National Convention in Tampa last year, which asserted support for gun rights, traditional marriage, border security and opposition to abortion.
Another resolution honored former Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. Others related to eduction, foreign policy, national security and the nation's space program passed unanimously.
Well eventually they'll learn...
Best though is "controversy" around the gay RNC member! :D

QuoteWhen the National Republican Party took a voice vote to approve a resolution reasserting the party's opposition to same sex marriage, Robert Kabel, a gay committeeman from the District of Columbia who supports allowing same sex nuptials, didn't speak up. At least not loud enough for anyone to hear him.
Immediately after the vote at RNC's quarterly meeting here Friday, Chairman Reince Priebus declared that all 157 members present had supported the measure.
But despite the tally, which officially recorded the vote as unanimous, Kabel insists he dissented.
"I voted against the resolution. I did, it just wasn't very vocal," Kabel said after the meeting. "It's hard to hear in here."
Kabel, a lawyer and former leader of the Log Cabin Republicans, became the first gay local chairman within the Republican Party when he was elected to chair the D.C. GOP in 2004. Nearly a decade later, he is working quietly within the party to remove the traditional marriage clause from the official party platform, which passed at the Republican National Convention last August and won't be open for changes until the next convention in 2016.
At closed-door meetings with other members this week, Kabel voiced opposition to the party's decision to take a vote reaffirming the official position against same sex marriage. Members had introduced the measure in an effort to soothe tensions with social conservatives worried that the party may veer from its long-held position on the issue.
When time came for the full body to vote on it, party members decided to lump the resolution together with 11 others and vote on them as a whole. A handful of members, including Kabel, said they wanted to vote on the resolutions one at a time, but were overruled. When the time to vote arrived, no "nay" votes were heard.
So why didn't Kabel, who last month delivered a speech to thousands of pr0-same-sex marriage demonstrators in front of the Supreme Court advocating for legal same sex marriage, speak up?
"It's not my style," he said. "I prefer to do it one on one as opposed to grandstanding. I'm not into grandstanding."
Kabel said that there are "several" RNC members who support same sex marriage rights, but he wouldn't say how many within the party agree with him.
"It's gonna change faster among Republicans outside of the committee," he said. "It's a long process."
   :(
What a bunch of dipshits.
They're Republicans, what do you expect?
The gay marriage issue is like a gaint steam roller move at two miles an hour and they are wearing cement boots. The gay steam roller will crush them in time.

More of their sons need to be converted to gay.

Eh, it's not like they're talking about getting rid of social security.
Well, at least you gotta admire them for sticking to their guns rather than doing the moral and politically smart thing and following every sane person in the world by mellowing out on the homophobia.
I mean seriously. If the republicans stop ranting about hating gay people then what are the idiotic segments of the population to do. Suddenly vote for the far more gay friendly democrats?
11B has a point. Roe v Wade was forty years ago, but people still won't shut the hell up about abortion. These things take time to flush through the back end of society.

Apples and oranges.
Abortion will always be a moral issue - because no matter how you slice it, it's a legitimate ethical question that has no single "right" answer. Gay marriage, on the other hand, is like segregation, mixed marriage or universal suffrage - it's one of those issues that once it gets done, people forget about it and move on.
Yes, in forty years from now, there will be a group of people that do not like gays, just like there is a group of people who do not like blacks, or disrespect women - but in 10 years from now no reasonable politician would suggest reversing gay marriage - but 100 years from now people will still argue in favor of banning abortion.
You never have been able to understand another person's point of view, have you Mart?
Look, gays are bad, OK. You people are on the same forum as Martinus. HOW CAN YOU NOT GET THIS? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

Because Marti's failings have little to do with being gay.

Until we can permanently fix homosexuality, of course.
Marty's right.
However, I think gay adoption will continue to be an issue for a long time.

No, but we have too many Martinus's.
The solution is simple. Support the rights, but hate Marti (and wish to ban everything for him only).

They are sticking to their guns because they have to, they have a powerful social conservative political faction to answer for. There is nothing admirable about it, they will dump the social conservatives if it becomes advantageous and practicable to do so....which it will as they become more marginalized.

Oh, I imagine that'll happen eventually. If homosexuality is truly something you are born with, then doctors will be able to detect it in the womb, and if they allow parents to choose sexual orientation of their unborn offspring homosexuality will like disappear or be dramatically be reduced in a generation.

I don't think it will happen like that, I think the younger generation of social conservatives will be more resigned or even accepting of gay rights.

I think that is a flavor of that. The older social conservatives will be marginalized in their own movement.
I think they'll just find less overt ways to express their hate.
