Title: Insect Jewelry
Post by: Malthus on March 27, 2013, 03:44:18 PM
I found this unreasonably cool.  ;)

Caddis Fly Larvae make mobile "homes" out of stuff they find lying around at the bottom of ponds and streams. Deprive them of their usual stuff and they will use anything ... some artist person made use of that trait to have the bugs make: jewelry. They gave them nothing but gold leaf and gemstones:

Hey Malthus, have you ever eaten bugs, and if so what kinds?

In Mexico, in Oaxaca, I had some sort of cricket dish. It was mostly oily and salty. Did not like.

Other than that, not to my knowledge. I like them to look at, not to consume.

You'd think a larvae would have better aesthetic sense.  :hmm:

As a child Malthus was abandoned in the woods and raised by termites.  He believed himself of the order Isoptera until 10 years old when he was brought back to civilization.  He still has an affinity for his six legged cousins, and consumes around one metric ton of wood each year.

All true!

Yet oddly enough, despite this unfortunate upbringing, I'm still better adjusted than the average Languishista.  :P

Well that's not exactly uncommon here.  JR was raised by leeches, HVC was raised by walruses, Neil was raised by a totem pole, Marty by ordinary Poles, Fahdiz by Grues, Ide by ionizing radiation, Grumbler by concentrated ill-will and Dguller by Russians.

Only a few of us can claim good backgrounds. :goodboy:
