Title: Living in Berlin
Post by: Faeelin on December 14, 2012, 02:10:38 PM
A friend is moving to Berlin, and asked me for advice on where to live in the city. The only reason I would kno wis because I dated a German guy for a few years, so the question is a bit odd, but I was wondering if anyone here had lived in the city and had some recommendations.

Didn't live there but I know people who did. What is your friend looking for? AFAIK rent there is pretty low compared to the rest of Germany, although increasing, but job prospects are not that good.

She's doing a fellowship there for a few months, so she has a job.

Less worries for her then. Generally speaking I guess she'd be better off looking for places in former East Berlin (Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichschain), the traditional hanging spot for alternative bohemian artsy types, but now getting slowly gentrified. Traditional inmigrant neighbourhoods to the south of the center like Kreuzberg and Neuköln are also options. Those are all quite close to the center of the city, further away there might be other places, but if she's there for a short term thing then unless money is a real deal breaker she's better off looking for places where the action is.

Berlin is pretty big and if you don't want to spend a lot of time on public transport, it would make sense to move reasonably close to your workplace. Other than that, the city center districts that Larch named are of course attractive for their cultural and night life. However, I don't think Neukölln is particularly attractive.

I can't tell if you're kidding, because there's an obvious explanation.

You people are so humorless sometimes.  And I mean you people, not you people.

His Majesty Bob lived there as an exchange student I believe, so you might want to get in contact with him.

I think we can All get behind the idea of watching those football fans in preference to the British fans attending euro2012:
