Title: Tablet: Ipad 4 or anything else?
Post by: Rex Francorum on December 12, 2012, 09:09:39 PM
Hello there,

To be clear, I know noting about mobile devices. Never had cell/smartphones or Ipodtouches of this world. I only have a MP3 player as mobile device. However, I am really interested into getting a tablet. I began to read some reviews and the general consensus seems that the Ipad4 is the best "overall" at the moment. Do you agree with that? What would you recommend for someone who wants to use media content, do photos and videos (even if I know those devices are not created especially for that) and read ebooks. So I dont want a lite reader. I hesitate between the Ipad and a few others Asus and Nexus 10.  Which one would you recommend?

Besides, I know nothing about wi-fi connectivity. I already have internet at home from a traditional isp. Do I need an additional plan for the tablet or I can suck up juice from the plan I already have. Looks like my modem is a router too (oh yeah I feel lost in wireless technology).

So, please, help :)

Yeah, I'd say go for an iPad (wifi version).  It will do everything you want it to do-- really well-- and there will be the smallest learning curve.  If you want to spend less money, and Android tablet such as Kindle Fire, Nexus 7 or Nook HD are good options.

I don't know how it works up in your neck of the woods but I doubt you'll need to pay extra to connect your iPad or whatever.  If your cable modem/router has wifi you may need the cable company's tech support to give you the password.

Your wifi iPad will see the network and after you pop the password in, you'll be surfing. Don't mess with the 3G crap.

I love my iPad.

It's almost scary how easily my 2 year old can use the iPad.

Lately he's been playing with a jigsaw puzzle app.  He can put together a 20-30 piece virtual puzzle like nobody's business.

My parents gave me an iPad 4th gen for Christmas;  said my year was shitty enough as it was, felt I needed a new toy.   :Embarrass:

But yeah, the WiFi makes life easy.  Now I can post shit on Languish from the sofa.

I don't, since my two year old has claimed the iPad as his own personal "puter". <_<

Lola started commandeering my wife's iPad several months ago.  It is pretty fascinating to observe-- the interface is so simple/intuitive that kids of any age can use it on a basic level as soon as they have some motor skills developed.  I can tell her to pull up her "Toy Phone" app and she scrolls right to it and starts it up.  She's even figured out how to do some navigation in Youtube (she loves Sesame Street and those Super Simple Song videos), which is a little scary.

If it were up to me I'd have kept it away from her-- she doesn't even turn 2 until April.  Wife gets 100% of the blame, and I always have to point that out to people because it's assumed that I'm the guilty one given my near-addiction to gadgets.  Funny thing is she knows not to touch my lowly Kindle Fire because I always tell her no.  Ditto for my phone since I have it locked by PIN.

Is iPad4 the one with retina display? I'm thinking of putting in an order for a 16gb no-3g as I've a friend going to new york next week and they are like half the price over there.

Yes.  I believe the 3rd generation iPad had it as well.

I don't know what you guys are using for cases, but I just received a bad-ass one from www.padandquill.com

I wanted a milspec one and I was looking at Ballistic, like I have for my iHipster, but I read reviews that the screen cover played optic games with the retina screen, and I wasn't too thrilled with Ottorbox's milspec one (too plasticky) or Griffin's Survivor (too flimsy-feeling), but then I figured, I'm not wearing this thing on my hip, so what the hell, get a nice faux folio for it.

I picked up P&Q's Octavo case;  this thing has a good weight to it, with a wooden frame and rubber corner clamps that keep it totally snug;  this thing isn't moving.  Very happy with it.

What do you guys use?

Something from Acase. Saved my ass twice in a year.
