just play BG or IWD. great games that continue to be modded. and most definitely "old school."

BG2 + expansion will give him 30-odd hours of play, certainly.

Etrian Odyssey 1 & 2 and The Dark Spire on DS are the closest things to real old school dungeon crawls made in the last few years.

I still haven't finished since I got the disks from Grey Fox. I'm a chronic restarter.

Arx Fatalis is pretty old school.  Good dungeon crawler.  Lot of fun.

Dungeon crawlers without ASCII is heresy. All such programs should be burned at the stake.

Me: late.

What I said in the Dwarf Fortress thread. ZAngbandTK. It's a Rogue-like, but the guy thought to replace the stupid ASCII characters with tiled graphics. It's good middle ground.
