We didn't get all the characters during the time I watched here in Germany (early 80s), but of the ones we did, definitely Ernie.

Cookie Monster iirc.

Was Kermit on Sesame Street? I can't recall that.

Yes.

edit:  well, maybe not for a certain generation, he was for mine--Sesame Street (1969–2001, 2009) (TV)

A toss-up between Kermit, Elmo and Big Bird. Went with Kermit because he is green.

The fun part was working out who would be purged each episode.  ;)

Definitely Cookie Monster.  That was solidified when mom took me to see Sesame Street on Ice and he waved to me

When I first started watching, The Count scared me a bit.  Didn't help that my brothers told me all kinds of gory stories about him.

Null vote, never so it as I'm of a certain age, so I'll go for the Banana Splits.

I liked the dog Barkley.  In fact, I named my fish after the muppet when I was four or so.  There were two other fish, one was named Fred and the third I forgot his name because the other two fish killed and ate him. :(

Well, when the pig and the rabbit grew up, they became Putin opponents.  As a result, every channel they've been on has been closed or taken over by Putin on one pretext or another.

Given the online personas of most posters here, I'm surprised that he's not winning in a huge landslide.

I liked the Count, but he always annoyed me by counting so slowly and interrupting everybody;  Oscar was OK, but loved Cookie Monster, because those were awesome-looking cookies.

I don't know why but I went to check when they made that switch.

Apparently they didn't like the idea of adults not believing Big Bird when he told them about Snuffleupagus, because it might discourage kids from reporting sexual abuse.  Makes sense when it's stated that way.

German Seasame Street at my time was partially home produced, partially bought from U.S. (mostly puppet bits like Ernie & Bert, Kermit, Cookie Monster, the Count, Grover, some cartoons etc.).

The actual "Sesame Street" bits were dubbed when my older sisters were little (70s?), then during my days replaced by German muppets/actors, which is what I grew up on (early 80s):

Fairy chick they introduced a few years ago. She seemed the most commonly used character from the glimpses I got during my nieces' visit this summer.

Interesting explanation. I was always curious about that.
