This thing is getting amazing reviews. It's supposed to be the ultimate Hong Kong open-world undercover cop thingy of all time.
Anyone got it? Thoughts, etc.?
So nice of you to mention Jacob.
No time for games Dr. Jones. Not for at least next three weeks

Apparently you can sing karaoke in the game and the actual voice actor for the main character sings.
Looks really good and I may purchase it this holiday season.
I liked the recent trailers, but I have so many unfinished games, I'll probably wait for the inevitable Steam xmas sale. :P
I bought it from Steam but it's not released yet in Europe...
I didn't actually follow the release since I haven't worked at UFG for a while (since shortly after Activision cancelled the game) but my comment is: I wrote it, so good to see the positive mentions of the story and characterization. There is some good stuff in there.
Buddha did a bit of work on the game too :)

Or my poor dexterity.
So my 2 cents after about an hour of play -
Naturally easy to compare to GTA though I'd say it feels more gritty and has less of the cartoonishness of GTA, the karaoke bit notwithstanding (The Clash!).
Seems to be several skill trees that you can level up in based on the type of experience you get. Most missions give you triad and/or cop experience - with some special missions giving you just face experience. Mono will be happy to note that one way to make sure you get the full amount of cop experience in each mission is to obey traffic laws (i.e. don't hit cars, property or innocents). :D
I like that garages in the game keep a record of every vehicle that you own - so even if you leave your motor bike alongside the road, you can always pick it back up at the garage. Nice compared to the mostly useless garages in GTA.
Combat seems fun and two enemies will attack you at the same time - so you are frequently alternating between beating one guy down and countering the other. Like that you can use the environment in combat. One of my early kills involved smashing a guy into a fish tank and then later watching a guy get sliced up by the fan I held his head down on.
Oddly though, I've barely encountered any weapon wielding foes at this point. A few guys with knives but that's about it - which is odd because one of the early level ups is to be able to grab guns from foes without an extended struggle. Haven't had use for it as of yet.
Can't say much about the story yet as I'm not that far in - but largely seems to be about balancing cop duties and triad duties (like the various experience sets).
Oh one thing I don't like though is how many times there are events where you have to quickly press the correct button within a split-second. Had to play a couple times over when this cop was trying to arrest me as I'd barely even noticed the quick pop-up to press x to break his hold. -_-

God, how I hate quick time events. It's when developers want to show a cool sequence that's not possible in the "normal" gameplay mechanics but want to make it interactive, nevertheless, instead of just showing a cutscene.
I think I'd be okay with them if I knew they were coming but there was no warning. Drug dealer said to me: Cops are coming, be cool don't move. Then my character started running but cop cut him and started to put on cuffs. I was supposed to be prepared that I'd need to press x which seemed odd especially given the advice I'd been given by the drug dealer.
Yep quick time events are horrid.
It's the reason I never finished Dragon's Lair - the whole game is one long qte.
So far garbon, what do you think of the different characters?
Who have you met? Winston, Jackie, Amanda, Raymond, Mrs. Chu?
Any predictions on what's going to happen?
Sure I can speak to that. So far I think the characters all seem pretty well formed as far as being coherent/distinct.
I've met Winston, Jackie, Amanda and Raymond.
Winston - strikes me as a hardass gang leader though I wonder with the fools around him how he's lasted so long
Jackie - naive childhood friend, wonder how he has survived given that he likes to pick fights but is kinda scrawny :D
Amanda - hmm, my bias but not a fan. So far just blonde American who doesn't seem to know better (letting a random stranger in a foreign country drive you around?!)
Raymond - ooh, I think he might irritate me as much as he irritates Wei. Totally the rule minder.
So far seems to be Wei trying to worm his way into the triads and up the ladder. Thinking as I sort of stated above that there's going to be a big issue for him in remembering his a cop and not just giving in to criminal methods - as although he is saying he is fine, his recurring nightmares seem to suggest that he will be faced with the choice of going vigilante style on those that harmed his family.
Only character who strikes me oddly is the cop woman - as I'm not entirely sure it is the best plan to be undercover but also participating in general cop tasks. On one hand only me as the undercover could go around beating up members of the gangs - but I don't understand how I'm not seen. Like when I beat up some guys near where playboy is encamped so as to hack the surveillance camera. No one in the gangs noticed that?

Short answer: no. No one remembers, just like people quickly forget how you (may have) killed hundreds of innocents with your crazy driving and insane shooting.
Yeah that's true as in that is equally the same. :)

Dammit, this game is going to derail my entire NCAA 2013 season.
I caved in and bought it now at full price for the PS3.
Played it for about eight or nine hours now and so far it's my favorite game this year.
I love the dialogue between the minor NPCs, like the vendors. I never realized how empty my life was until I had a pork bun.
The combat is great. It really does feel a lot like Arkham Asylum. The slow motion gimmick works really well too and it gives the feeling of John Woo movie.
I really like the story so far. Only about 40% done with the main story. My main criticism so far is it feels too short. Much of my eight hours in the game has been spent doing open-world game sorta things, like fleeing the police after stealing a boat and smashing pedestrians into my open car door while I'm driving at 80 mph.

The dialogue. And the Daptone station. The perfect Hong Kong soundtrack. The hand to hand comabt is good, but the driving is exceptional. The plot is not original, but it is well-crafted. Originality is overrated. There's a very Wars of the Roses thing going on. Uncle Po is great. Not Ping is great.

Love the combat, the story, the open world, the characters and voice acting, the driving and the slow motion effect. I'm using the high texture pack and it looks great and runs smoothly although shadows are at normal.

Dude, when it was an Activision game she was going to have an Orange Valley accent...
As it happens, however, in HK any East European prostitute is referred to as "Russian".
when you bump into some random pedestrian and he says "hey buzz off" or those kinds of things, a few of those are Buddha dialogue... or at least they were way back when this was just starting... maybe Yakie (or some post Yakie writer?) rewrote that stuff.
Some of it should be in there :)
Again, great on the Daptone records.
Hey there is a demo out.
I'm finding myself spending an unusual and unhealthy amount of time in the game visiting prostitutes and grapping random women dragging them into alleys or to my apartment

This while the world is a mix of all the most uninteresting bits from every sandbox game you can think of.

Well, that's just like, their opinion, man.
It's a game about fucking gangsters. They do not have healthy and appropriate attitudes towards women, or brown people, or anyone else. Sheesh. I bet this reviewer is upset about the racism inherent in Tolkien's invented universe.
The black character thing was something they fucked up after I left the game, unfortunately.

So Jacob posted on FB that Sleeping Dogs is being made into a movie:

Jacob, I assume the answer is "no", but do you get anything out of the movie version? Do you get a writing credit for the screenplay? Are you tempted to reach out to the producers to ask for one?
I doubt I will get anything out of it in any shape or form. I may get a credit in the movie if that's how Hollywood works with films from game adaptations... but it's completely outside my control and my sphere of connections at this point.

Bloody world
Most default entertainment contracts make you agree to give up transformation rights unless you are strong enough to bargain for them. The videogame industry is probably a Randian paradise on that regard.
Europe has some default provisions that grant a small amount of residuals even if not directly written in the contract. If Jacob gets credit recognition he might be able to claim those from the EU portion of revenues, I know some friends in the US that are getting checks that way. Actually he might be eligible for WGA residuals depending on the credit he gets, but I'm not that knowledgeable on that.
Are there any sort of steps Jacob should follow up on to try and get writing credit recognition?
Read what his contract says regarding transformation rights and check with his lawyer.
I don't suppose it's as simple as just reaching out to the producer and asking?

The producer will refer him to the contract, most likely.
If the movie gets done, there's an arbitrage process within the WGA to adjudicate film credits, and it has pretty established rules. But it's very protective of film screenwriters vs other actors. A story credit though might be realistic and good enough for residuals, but it depends on what's on Jacob's contract and how exactly the movie turns out being (i.e. if the story and characters are totally different despite using the title). He might be able to get credit even if not written in his contract (I'm not an expert on American IP law, I'm more familiar with the Euro one), but it would probably involve much more sweat and lawyeering on his part.

While I haven't looked at it recently, I'm almost 100% certain there's no reference to any kind of derivative works or film scripts or anything like that. It just wasn't on anyone's radar.
HOWEVER - I did join the WGA during my time on
Sleeping Dogs, specifically so I'd be WGA for the project. So maybe I should reach out to them... though I haven't paid any dues since then, not having been actively pursuing writing work.
I kind of think you should. Try and pull out your contract, reach out to the WGA, then try to contract the producers.
