To paraphrase Linda Ellerbee - while reading this ask yourself, who is in charge here?
QuoteA 15-year-old Ohio boy collapsed after a four-day Xbox marathon, his parents say.
The boy was holed up in his bedroom for the majority of the weekend playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, a "first-person shooter" game.
According to NBC's Columbus affiliate, the boy collapsed several times on Tuesday, hours after emerging from his room. He was hospitalized and treated for severe dehydration.
Jessie Rawlins, the boy's mother, told WCMH-TV that he turned very pale and his lips "became a disturbing blue color."
"I was very scared," Rawlins said. "I thought he was going to die. He just fell over three times."
The boy is expected to recover, but won't be playing video games anytime soon. "The Xbox is gone," Rawlins said.
The dangers of hard-core gaming and so-called video game addiction have long been debated.
In 2007, the American Psychiatric Association considered including "video game addiction" in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) but decided against it.
In 2009, an Ohio teenager was found guilty of murdering his mother and shooting his father after they would not allow him to play Halo 3. His defense team argued that he was addicted to video games.
Earlier this year, a Taiwanese teenager collapsed and died at an Internet cafe after playing Diablo III, an online video game, for 40 consecutive hours without eating, according to local media reports. A similar death was reported in South Korea in 2005.
Dr. Mike Patrick, an emergency physician at Nationwide Children's Hospital, told The Associated Press he recommends common sense when gaming: "Get plenty of food and fluids, take breaks for physical activity, and put the controller down now and then to get some decent sleep."
The first and worst mistake was getting an XBOX.
PS3 is better. :P
At what? Being a dust magnet?

That was too easy.
Computers get less dusty than consoles?
I'm thinking of getting a super slim Ps3 when they come out. :)

My PS3 does seem to attract a lot of dust-- much more than my Xbox, at least.
My son does not play online that long, I don't let him.
Because it slows down my connection on my PS3.
Know what I blame this on the breakdown of? Society.
It may not have ended well, but until then it sounds like he had an awesome weekend.

Meh. It would have been much cooler if he had been hospitalized after a four-day weekend of fun and games in Vegas. Xbox marathon is just pathetic.

Yeah, that's something you can brag about. "I went to Vegas and had the time of my life! I didn't sleep for four days until I collapsed from exhaustion!"
"I spent four days playing Call of Duty, refusing to move and sitting in my own filth until I passed out from dehydration".
But still not cool.

I'm torn about how things will be should I have kids.
On the one hand denying them consoles clearly seems the best option. They do fuck up development.
On the other....daddy wants his toys. :(
QuoteThey do fuck up development
My nephews grew up with Genesis/3D0/PS1 and with xbox and they turned out fine. My goddaughter played PC games and she turned out fine.
Just limit the stuff to an hour.
Not sure if calling a 15 y.o. "boy" is appropriate. This is a teenager. When I read the thread title, I picture a 6 y.o. or something.
Especially as, in all likelihood, a 15 y.o. who plays X-box for 4 days in a row has probably a body of katmai proportions.

Indeed it has little to do with the video games and much to do with the parent who was neglectful / inspired no impulse control in their child. My mother would have beat my ass had I tried to pull such a stunt.
Sad...to see the Tyrs of the world get suckered by the media portrayal.

Again, the "child" is 15 y.o. Even in Poland, which is quite lenient/liberal in this, this is the age one could be criminally liable - i.e. the society assumes that the person of that age is capable of telling right from wrong and directing one's actions in a manner that does not make parents fully responsible.

I'm not sure why we're interested in a Polish lawyer's misunderstanding of a headline from a news blog.

Yes because this behavior probably manifested out of nowhere. Witness what they have of the mother. She was ready to take decisive action once her kid hospitalized himself but didn't have enough foresight to stop it before or during?

That still not a reason to not go & scowl the kid after the 10th time you call that dinner was ready.

Because he's much more interested in the concept of fucking a hospitalized 15 year old than a hospitalized 6 year old?

Okay, fair. -_-
