QuoteThe graphic sex exhibit at the Museum of Science and Technology is entering its second week in this city, despite demands from some family groups to shut it down.

Sex: A Tell-All Exhibit was crafted with input from sexologists and is intended for children 12 and up. It's on loan from the Montreal Science Centre and will be on display in Ottawa for a year.

It includes floor to ceiling photos of naked toddlers, children, adults and elderly, a forest of dildos sporting flavoured and heated condoms and a climax room with a screen showing aroused genitals.

After seeing the exhibit, Heritage Minister James Moore told the curators that it wasn't appropriate for young children to see without their parents. Now, he says, it's up to the public to decide.

"We believe in our national museums and their important role, but that doesn't mean that they are infallible," Moore told reporters Tuesday. "If the public expresses some concerns about what they are doing either financially or on the programming side, then it's their job to represent the public's interest, and it's not always black and white, there's a lot of grey area, and the Museum of Science and Technology has encountered this grey area."

After many complaints from parents in Ottawa, an animated video showing young people how to masturbate was removed and the age young people can attend by themselves was boosted from 12 to 16.

However, any student can still see the show on field trips with their teachers.

For all it's the capital, Ottawa really has a small-town atmosphere, and a much more easily shockable populace. Plus, it is full of federal politicians.  :D

It just means they are around to express public outrage.  Of course what they do in private is a different story ...  :D

Point is that such a display in Toronto or Montreal would raise little fuss. At least, little of the "oh won't anyone think of the children?!" sort of fuss.

I'm not outraged, but that just seems like a weird and somewhat humdrum choice for an exhibit.
