Would a Dell Inspiron 620 be enough for most games?
I went to Staples and they had a 620 with a i3-2120 processor, dude claimed 3.3 ghz and 8 gb RAM. I wish Staples printed out the specs.
On the Dell site they're listing a 620 with i5-2320, 3.0 Ghz, 6 gb memory.
How easy is it to confirm that the Staples dude gave me legit specs on that computer?
Is it weird that an i3 series is faster than an i5 series?
Get a i5-2500 or 2500k.
Do. not. settle. for. less.
What is your budget and what kind of games do you want to play?
AMD processors are not as powerful as Intel, but they are way, way cheaper.
I kinda like this bundle here:

I'm aiming at around $800 but it's negotiable.
I would definitely like to play CK II. Maybe World of Tanks? Civ V?
I would also like to have something in the tank for the next generation of strategy games. No real interst in mega graphics FPS or role playing.

Well that will certainly drop the conceivable cost. You would be happy with an i3, if that's the case. You could score a decent CPU for under $500.

A year ago, I got a 6 core Athlon with 6 GB memory from Dell. Don't get an i3.
If you want to play games, you need to worry about your graphics card, not your proessor. Any moden CPU will be strong enough to handle most modern games.
Do not settle for integrated graphics.
Don't go less than an i5 for processor and yeah, no integrated graphics.

No.
Don't worry about processor. Any will be strong enough. Games are never, ever, limited by CPU these days.
Just make sure you have a halfway decent GPU and decent memory.

Disagree, especially if he wants to play a game like Crusader Kings II which I think does eat up a lot of CPU power.
I can play CK2 fairly well on my old ghetto computer. Nice as the highest speed isn't blazing fast :)
Turns out after more phone time that my employee discount with Dell is a whopping 4%. :bleeding:
That opens the door to other brands/sites etc. Anyone have any suggestions?
Out of curiosity, do you think you would be comfortable building your own?
E: If not, you could always cruise Newegg for prebuilt computers that meet your requirements. http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=10&name=Desktop-PCs Maybe use them as a sort of baseline to check prices and such.
Just a quick glance turns this up: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227383
3.3ghz AMD 6 core, 8gb RAM, GTX 560 with 2GB v-RAM, 1TB HDD, 700W PSU, Win 7 64. $800 + $25 shipping. No monitor though if you need that. Just an example of what's there.

Thanks for the advice and all, but I think I'll just go with the Dell w/ i5 CPU.
No Burger, I would not be up for assembling my own.
Anyone got any input on this one?

Peter, the video card is not good enough for gaming. In that order, you should get a 7870, 7850, 6870 or 6850 depending on the price.
Power supply should be replaced with a 700w from a good brand as soon as you get this computer though. I don't trust generic ps anymore.
Finally got the new PC up and running.
Lo and behold, there's no built in CD drive.
How much of a pain is it to install one?
Also, looked at the store and I can get a "half height" driver for 29.99 and a vanilla for 49.99. WTF is with this half height business?
Depends on how tight the working space is in your PC. It should be very easy to install a CD drive, but with space constraints it can be a surprising PITA.
Guess I don't have much choice either way.
Any thoughts on the half height issue?
Also, comp. came with a very stripped down MS Office suite, no Outlook. I looked at the MS site and it looks like you can't really buy Outlook stand-alone.
So should I buy the suite, or are there competitors out there i should consider?
By the way, how often do you think you'll be using a DVD drive? In the last few years, I find that I've only used it a couple of times, when I needed to use my Windows disk. Is external drive an option?
I still have a couple game discs.

Check www.libreoffice.org for the Office Suite.
For Outlook replacement, it depends: what is it you need from Outlook? Collaboration with work space? Calendar? Mail capabalities?
If it's only for mail, check out Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/
Fo something else, I don't really know, but Google should give you some results :)
Windows Live Mail does a decent job as a mail client.
You can get MS Office for home for ~$100. Still kind of pricey, but since so much of the world works on Word and Excel I found it worthwhile to buy.
