Title: Happy Cinco de Mayo
Post by: Syt on May 05, 2009, 02:35:12 PM
Happy Battle of Puebla day, beaners!

QuoteAccording to a paper published by the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture about the origin of the observance of Cinco de Mayo in the United States, the modern American focus on the people of the world that day first started in California in the 1860s in response to the resistance to French rule in Mexico.[12] The 2007 paper notes that "The holiday, which has been celebrated in California continuously since 1863, is virtually ignored in Mexico."

Huh, didn't know that.  The Mexicans I knew in California celebrated it, always assumed it was everywhere in Mexico too.

Mexicans celebrate the 16th of September which we totally ignore here in the US.

But hey Americans call Tex-Mex food Mexican food so what do they know about Mexico?

It is not totally ignored in Mexico but it is a minor Holiday.  Most people over here seem to think it is their version of the 4th of July.

But then most people think Margaritas are Mexican to (even though they were invented in Cuba....by a Texan...)

Sorry to hurt your sensitivities.

It remains a fact, though, that Mexico have never produced females of the same quality other countries like Brazil or Venezuela do.

Well, vaginas, but that's more of a class issue and not a trait specific to mexican women.

I see no reason not to be a little vulgar from time to time.  It's not like wishing harm on someone.

Well they sorta did since they killed all the Mexicans in the fort they stormed

Claiming Puebla as a victory is like Texans claiming the Alamo was a victory....with the exception the French went on to take over Mexico while the Texans captured Santa Anna in the next major battle.

Well it is a bit complex but the Mexican elites told Napoleon III his troops would be welcomed in Mexico so he sent only a tiny force to march on Mexico City...like 7,000 or something.  The French were actually opposed by a Liberal militia who occupied the two forts at Puebla.  The French stormed the first fort and killed all the Mexicans but suffered heavy casualties so they decided to retreat back to Veracruz and ask for more men before they tried to take Mexico City again.  The Mexicans in the other fort saw the French leave and celebrated their victory.

The French sent 30,000 more and the French then took Mexico City without any major opposition and installed Maximillian as Mexican Emperor.
