I've never played much in the way of space simulators, but I have sudden urge to do so. I was thinking of getting the "X" series off gamersgate. Or maybe Freelancer. I do not have a joystick though. So any ideas on joysticks and possibly Space PC games?
Dude, Lettow's not really building a spaceship.
Fuck, this was suppose to be in the games HQ. I wonder if I can delete it. Apparently I can not. Perhaps a nice mod will come by and move it maybe? Or Seedy.
An aesthetically challenged mod moved it.

Dude why all the hate on Berkut?
Thanks.
Frontier Elite was the pinacle. Nothing ever surpassed it.
Though Escape Velocity was also good.
Freelancer I remember being OK but that is all. Cool but shallow and short.
The Babylon Project http://babylon.hard-light.net/ has the virtue of being free. It seemed pretty good when I played it, but I'm not into this kind of game. It is old (based on Freespace 2), but costs only your time.
Wing Commander Saga, which is another Freespace2 TC.

BSG online might occupy your time while your evaluating which of your choices to spend dollars on; it's "free", for a certain value of free, and almost solely limited to ship-to-ship combat.
So anything about Joysticks?
Everyone I know who has ever got one tried to use it once or twice then it ended up just cluttering their cuboard
TAC 2
You dont need a stick to play SFC 2
Raz, you need to decide, do you want jostick-twitching combat and 3D visuals, or the whole RPG experience of a sandboxy space game? Sadly, you cannot really get both.
Yeah, the X-series is somewhere in-between, except that it's a tedious spreadsheet strategy game, with a real time travel and combat part put on it.
If you want the RPG experience, then you can get the complete Space Rangers 2 compilation (Reboot, or something like that), for quite cheap.
It is a top-down turn based thing, and it's loads of fun. There is an annoying RTS mini-game about battling on planet surfaces but luckily it is optional. The other mini-game is an elaborate text adventure thingie when you are thrown into prison somewhere.
It has trade, it has combat, it has a plot, and it has tons of NPC ships and characters going about their business.

I had a joystick for Crimson Skies a long time ago. Lot of fun. One of my favorite PC games ever made.
Tamas, I'm thinking about dog fighting like it's 1942 in spaceships and perhaps some trade etc. I wanna be a hotshot space pilot with a girl in every port of call. Since that is unlikely, I'll go for a game that simulates that.

If you don't mind dated graphics, then Wing Commander: Privateer (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/wing_commander_privateer) might fit the bill.
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/star_wolves is surprisingly good game, even if not sandbox type. Sort of RPG in space, but you're not too restricted to missions or areas. I've had a lot of fun with it. Combat is quite good and sometimes really challenging.
No joystick required.
I didn't like the sequel.
Interestingly the X series is on sale on Steam.
What does sandbox game mean?

What does sandbox game mean?
It's meant to represent a game where you have mostly free will of action. The setting of the game is a "Sandbox". GTA games are a good examples. There are missions, a story, objectives but you can choose to ignore them & just keep running over pedestrians.
SPAZ was entertaining for 3 bucks before 'easy' difficulty turned into shoving bamboo sticks up my ass difficulty.
Anyone remember that old game Space Rogue? It was awesome. So was Starflight.
Starflight on the genesis and Star control 2 on the 3do. Good times. :)
:hmm: I don't remember if I ever beat Starflight.
I did.Back when I had the time and energy for video games.
Raz has decided to hold off on buying expensive new PC games and controllers. My sis is having a tough time up in Wisconsin and I'm going to send her some cash to help make ends meet. I bought Torment off Good old Games for like 10 bucks. That'll be enough for now.
Thank you all for your input.

I just finished a rerun of Torment. Get the widescreen mod and some of the restored content, it becomes even better than it was.

Oooh! Sounds neat. When I booted it up I was surprised that I couldn't change the resolution.
I liked both Space Rangers 2 and Star Wolves.

Man the download instructions for that is pretty long. Yeesh.
Yes, but do you really want to play it at 800X600?
L.
It is a bit jarring. The main character is about 3 inches tall my monitor. It's like I'm playing with GI Joes again.
Btw, I thought Freelancer was fun if you wanna get it on the cheap...or I can try and see if I have my cds still and mail you. Won't be playing it again. :D
That's okay, garbon. I'm not giving you the coordinates to the Raz Cave.
Yes, because I want to come to Missouri. :P
Garbon don't touch states unless they have ocean bordering them

+1 or at least a Great Lake!
He may send Thugge assassins. Can't be to careful.
Anyway, I found I didn't like messing with the resolutions. I'll just keep it the way it is. As God Intended. I'll use the restored content patch though.

Good thing we aren't related.
