Why is anime sucking so much these days.
I was watching Tears of Tera, and it sucked.
Everybody recomended it as the greatest thing, and it sucks.
Ok, I understand is a new take on King Arthurs legend, but please.
Here are my complaints:
1- If you gonna have a Roman Empire, why can't it be historical, with 4th century CE roman armor, not late medieval 3 quarter armor.
2- Why do the characters wear neo-punk haircuts with "steampunk" clothing?
3- Why do we always have to have the screaming angry teenager and "cute" speaking animal mascot?
4- Why combat can't be realistic, and instead all the dudes have all these near-superpowers?
What a waste. Animation was above average, lots of blood, but too much dialog and too much teen stupidity.
I gave it one star out of five.
What happened with the good shit like Starblazer?
No animals, the ship doctor was a drunkard, lots of sci-fi hard babble-tech, realistic tactis and dramatic situations.
Anyway, post your bitches and complaints, but don't forget to mention any good shit either.
I think the last good anime I watched was Owls Moving Castle.
<_<
Yeah! And what's the deal with airline food?
Anime these days? Are you following the latest seasons?
Of this current season i'll admit it's weak compared to it's immediate predecessor. Currently airing anime I am currently watching:
Mirai Nikki- a pulpy action psychological work. It's good fun, and I recommend it to you, siege.
Daily lives of Highschool Boys- A good comedy, but I don't think there is anyone here who'd appreciate it.
Nisemonogatari- The sequal to Bakemonogatari, which is..very unique, and merits looking at. Fanservice, strange directing decisions and odd dialogue.
The previous season had Fate/Zero part 1, which was great, and I am confident that you'd like it. It is the prequel to Fate/Stay Night, which is a good visual novel that received a mediocre anime adaptation. If you have no patience to read the (quite long) visual novel, I don't think there's much harm in just watching the prequel, which is probably the superior work.
I think Spring 2011 was the best anime season that's come around in awhile.
If you are looking for a good movie with military acting and a dark tone/realistic setting, why not try Jin-Roh?
Legend of Galactic Heroes remains the definitive masterpiece on war ever animated.
Oddly enough, all of your description of Star Blazer apply to Irresponsible Captain Tylor, but it's a comedy, so you may or may not like it.
Edit: Since this is also a thread for complaints, they need to quit adapting yuri manga before it's finished. It leads to artificial ends and poor reception that make it simultaneously in need of a second season and less likely to get one. Aoi Hana and Sasameki Koto were both fine, but would have been much better if they'd been released upon the completion of the manga. Jumped the gun to get on the bandwagon of the manga's popularity, and that's the result.
Also, Noitamina seems to have been losing its credibility lately.

Asiana's airline food is fucking great!
Regarding Tears to Tiara, you realize it's an anime based off an eroge adaptation, right?
This usually means several things:
1) The eroge is superior
2) the plot did not have a high quality standard, because it was an eroge
With a few notable exceptions, visual novels adapted into anime make for poor viewing. Who are these people who recommended it so highly?
Too much fanservice these days.
Needs more Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Legend of Galactic Heroes had fanservice, though.

That's an eroge.
Creepy as fuck.
You don't remember the scene, Neil? It's just one of Reinhard's more moé moments later in the series, with some generic eroge text added in to enhance the mood. I figured you, alone among the forum members, would get it.

Yeah, although Reinhard would occasionally have those moments. His design was a bit of a trend at the time.
I wasn't sure if somebody had made a fly-by-night eroge of the series, as those Japanese are wont to do.

Agreed.
On a student's recommendation I looked up something called Highschool of the Dead. A pretty cool take on the zombie apocolypse scenario.....but so freaking much fanservice thrown in everywhere.

If by that you mean a normal person could enjoy it, then yes, yes it is.
It's enjoyable if the only stimulus you need is a steady stream of breasts and guns
but really, I gave you the benefit of the doubt prior to this on your tastes, despite holding up champloo as a pinnacle of animation

I wouldn't call Champloo a pinacle of animation.
It certainly is enjoyable.
I'd say Cowboy Beebop is up there though.
My favorite anime is the Rurouni Kenshin OVA "Trust & Betrayal"
I like Rurouni Kenshin better when it's called Katanagatari.
I can't touch the Cowboy Bebop one. Bebop is a masterpiece, as you say.
Dude, I started Senguko and i quit.
There was a dude on a horse, suppossed to be a Takeda, with motorcycle handles on his horse.
I love Anime, but anime kind of sucks these days.
I grant you better animation, but story wise and design they suck.
Have you ever seen Firebird (Phoenix 2772 in the States), or Lupin the 3rd- The Castle of Cagliostro, or Prince of The Sun?
How about Voltus Five?
Castle of Cagliostro is good stuff. The others are before my time. I think Cagliostro is surprising since it was Miyazaki out of his comfort zone, but in the end it was something better than Miyazaki's average offering or the old Lupin series, so it turned out great.
They are still making Lupin stuff, you know.
I really have to disagree about anime sucking- I think it's never been better.
You might like Kino's Journey.
edit: This is a list of charts that detail recent releases in anime. As long as we can produce something like Spring 2011, I can't see anime as in anything but a rosy, healthy age.

Have you watched Submarine Super 99? ("Ocean Empire" back in Israel)
That was Epic. Or maybe i was just a kid back then.
I'll check out Kino's Journey.
Starblazer and Voltus Five will remain the greatest shit ever for me, though.
What do you think of Kimio Yabuki's Puss in Boots?
We had two back in Israel.
Puss in Boots around the world in 80 days, and Puss in Boots goes to the West.
I loved both.
Both of the Puss in Boots look really charming. I'd like to see them, but this is my first time hearing of them.
Submarine 99 is on my backlog of things I plan to get to. Since you like it, i'll bump it up on the list and probably watch it this month.
Edit: hard to find a good english subtitled version of it, though..

Kino's journey is weird and depressing.
It can be weird at times, but there's way weirder out there.
Depressing? I thought the overall mood was uplifting. The world isn't beautiful, therefore it is.
I like One Piece.
You really have to watch Phoenix 2772
It was dubbed in hebrew as Firebird.
looking back with 20/20 hindsight it was used as a zionist pet project. (zionism for us sefaradim meaning "social integration" or asimilation)
The main male character had a sefaradi name while the nany/sex-bot had an ashkenazi name.
Regardless, it remains the most influential full feature anime of my childhood.
Everything from child-warrior toy training to weapons training, to the flying chairs, to freeway and car design, comes from here.
I was convinced the actual Azriel Towers were designed based on this anime.

Haruhi Suzumiya is the best thing since Cowboy Bebop.
I started watching it on a anime nut's recommendation expecting some by the book crap about high school students fighting monsters or whatever....it is actually a pretty deep and well done piece of sci-fi/fantasy however.
Haruhi Suzumiya is okay. "Deep", though? I mean, it's no serial experiments lain, or even a tatami galaxy.
Haruhi Suzumiya's very existence is cheapened by the existence of endless eight.
Endless 8 was a PITA, but then that was that was the point of it, to show how horrid things were. Quite an interesting take on the Groundhog Day thing which is usually all fun and games and doing crazy stuff.
They did go a bit too over the top with it though.
I've never seen those other two, have been meaning to look up Tatami Galaxy but meh, I'm just never in the mood for anime these days, when I do watch subtitled stuff I try to stick to live action Japanese things, and even that is rare, I just want to relax after work.
Tatami Galaxy makes my top 10. I recommend it, but I can certainly understand wanting to avoid subtitled shows when you have so much moon to deal with in your daily life.
I never really liked Lain. It struck me as a little overwrought.
Full metal alchemist is good. There are two anime series. The first was done before the manga was completed, so it had an original story. The second anime series follows the manga. I've only seen the first anime and it is good. I've read that the second one is even better.

I always watch subtitled shows, even though I don't understand Japanese. Japanese voice acting is the best. The animation is also designed with the characters speaking Japanese in mind.

I've seen the first anime, and read the manga and the manga is definitely better than the first anime (which I agree was good). I definitely want to watch the 2nd anime one of these days.
Brotherhood is regarded as the better one, yes.
Liking Full Metal Alchemist is sort of plebian, though. Not as bad as One Piece, but still pretty bad.
I agree Lain was overwrought. The director tried too hard to make a work that would be interpreted differently by different people. I think Haibane Renmei was better work by the same people.

Why?
There are numerous reasons. Gateway babby's first series, for one. A shonen series at all, for another. Its sheer popularity causes something of a backlash, too.
Mind you, all of these are ameliorated to an extent by the quality of the show.
I may in the future appoint myself the arbiter of good taste in anime around here and announce what good is- at least for the last few years. Siege presents the point that there is a previous generation of anime with which I am not very aware. There is more anime than I can practically see in a lifetime, it seems.

Siege, if you want realistic combat anime, I recommend 'Zipang'. Of course, this being Japan, it is more Naval-oriented, but I believe you will like it.
Here is a brief description of the start of the series:
"The newest, most advanced destroyer in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, the JDS Mirai, sets sail from Japan on a training exercise with the United States Navy. Enroute, they encounter a strange meteorological anomaly, causing the Mirai to lose contact with her sister ships. After a short time, the crew detects a fleet approaching, but can barely believe their eyes as a massive battleship passes by them. The crew soon identify it as the Yamato, a ship which was sunk in 1945. As the crew scans with their radar, numerous other ships, including a Nagato class battleship, are sighted. Two destroyers from the unknown fleet attempt to intercept the Mirai, but she manages to escape.
After examining the situation, the crew concludes that the ships they passed are part of the Imperial Japanese Navy and that they have somehow been transported back in time more than 60 years to June 4, 1942, the first day of the Battle of Midway. Knowing that an American attack will soon devastate the four aircraft carriers of the Kido Butai, some Mirai crew members believe that they should intervene, to save the carriers and the 3,000 Japanese lives that will be lost."
Ughhh Zipang
pig disgusting wishy-washy show
moreover, it ends abruptly with no resolution of any sort
Why would you recommend that? Do you really dislike Siege?
Edit: Kusaka is a glorious gentleman worthy of praise and affection, though
His resplendent glory wasn't quite enough to save that do-nothing show.
What's the american name for Zipang?
Gloryhole.
Zipang's only name is Zipang. Many anime never receive other names other than their originals.

Japan. Zipang was used in the Middle Ages, I think.
The name Zipang is significant to the series- it represents an idealized, mythic Japan, similar to what early explorers envisioned. It is supposed to be the ideal Japan that can be born of ahistorical actions with historical foresight.
Which is kind of funny. The non-defeat of Japan in WWII would be a disaster for modern Japan.

Note that the show's emphasis is on the personal stresses and dramas of the crew when facing situations, especially the gunnery officer.
And the show ends at the end of a story arc. It feels incomplete simply because the manga hasn't ended yet (they had run out of source material at the time). There is much story after it, which could be told either in a second season, or by reading the manga.
Quote from: Neil

That is one of the decisions facing the crew. Should they risk all they know and their own future by intervening, or should they be loyal to their country above all and act, potentially jeopardizing their own existence?
The manga being ongoing is no excuse. As mentioned earlier in the thread, deciding to make an anime while the manga is ongoing without coming up with some sort of plan for how you want your series resolved is a recipe for disaster. A show's ending makes up an important part of its overall whole- if it simply doesn't have one, it will be judged that way.
For what it's worth though, the manga's ending is dumb butt stupid.
