Title: Fortune Summoners!
Post by: Lettow77 on January 31, 2012, 11:54:17 AM
The latest game to deserve languish's attention, Fortune Summoners, and the first game with real gameplay that i've found myself enjoying in a long time, came out yesterday.

It looks like this! (https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rockpapershotgun.com%2Fimages%2F11%2Fjuly%2Ffortune2.jpg&hash=90b7fa7c8db7f1b5a63691b85c14cb9d26ee3e27)

Arche is you, the protagonist. You just moved into a new town, and are about to go to school! Magic school! But there will be the ubiquitous slime blob enemies on the way there, as well as snakes.
The gameplay is sidescrolling combat, with quests, variable characters with different movesets, and so on. The combat is slightly more engaging than what a JRPG usually offers,
but that is hardly the focus of the game.

You can buy different outfits for your characters! My Arche has a green headband and a frilly, pleasant dress. Frilly, pleasant dresses are found on many of the citizens of Tonkiness, the town in which you start.

this is the third game translated by Carpe Fulgar, who hit gold with Recettear, their first title, in which you run an item shop and struggle to evade homelessness (as a little girl). Their second offering, Chantelise, was a more straighforward dungeon clearing romp where you set out to cure your sister of her transformation into a fairy. (You are her imouto.)

Chantelise was a dissapointment, but Fortune Summoners appears to be much closer to Recettear on the quality scale. I would encourage Languish to try it out- and pick up Recettear, while you are at it. :)

It's no worse than a thread about a Paradox game.

I find it hard to believe nobody on Languish would enjoy Recettear. It's a game entirely about making your ruinous monthly payments and gouging the customer.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpcmedia.ign.com%2Fpc%2Fimage%2Farticle%2F112%2F1122506%2Frecettear-an-item-shops-tale-20100921005319297-000.jpg&hash=9733e10b3c6a9abcc1da79b89fc2ec3ed60c0878)

There is an optional gameplay mode where you contract adventurers to go retrieve items for you, and each adventurer has a separate moveset and must be encountered in the plot, but it is entirely optional.

The core of the game is sales. Buy low, sell high!

 I don't see what my dakimakura has to do this this :blush:   A friend sent me one for free though, insisting it would be good for me.. so yes. It isn't have any nudity though- I specifically requested it didn't. How could someone share their bed with vulgarity? ;-;

Sexuality is an unwanted temptation of the defiled world.

Edit: It is worth noting that the dakimakura was something of a failed venture. When it comes to cuddling in the evening, my main source of comfort is the faithful mameshiba.

Dammit.  Why do I look up what Lettow is talking about?  I should know better. :(

First I looked up Mameshiba. Mameshiba.(豆しば?) is a Japanese merchandise franchise created by copywriter and Korean Japanese national Kim Sukwon. The Mameshiba are different varieties of beans (and other legumes) that have dog-like faces and tell trivia. Their name derives from a series of puns. The Japanese word for "bean" is mame (豆?), a toy version of the Shiba Inu is a mameshiba (豆柴?), and the Japanese word for "trivia" is mamechishiki (豆知識?, literally "beans of knowledge").
That's not really very enlightening.  But whatever.  Then I looked up the other one.  Bleh.

There's a pretty lengthy demo that covers around 2 hours of gameplay for this. Perhaps one of you shall check it out?

And, raz, you look these things up because you are a shut-in with nothing better to do. You could be a shut-in with a mameshiba, though!

Neil, I have enough faith in you that I don't think you'd entertain thoughts of me being a danger to anyone else.

And to speak frankly of sexual urges, I don't have as many as a normal person does- the impulse comes, but not very often, and its extremely embarrassing when it does.

Er, i'd elaborate more, but it's not a decent topic. Suffice to say, it is no great chore to shun sexuality. I don't necessarily think of it as an evil, but it suits my purposes to avoid it. I made a promise to do so, after all, and I hold to all agreements I make to the best of my ability.

No, I rather think that you'd be more of a danger to yourself than to others.  That was often the case with artistic, unconventional sensitive young men with mystical worldviews in times of great cultural upheaval.  You used to see these sorts of things 100 years ago.

At any rate, you still have some years to decide what to make of yourself.

I totally admit I am a danger to myself. Until nine days ago, not a day went by for months that I didn't think about killing myself. To the few close enough to explain this to (not languish, as I didn't really expect y'all to understand) I spoke of being "On the road to Sudoku." Renouncing the defiled world was part of a process of cleansing physical desire and preparing to fade away from existence. I was enchanted with the idea of getting a great work done to have something to leave behind- hence the sonnet project, hence the abortive novel attempt.

I was eager to get them done so I could off myself, so much so that the difficulty of getting them done really bore down upon me- I was impatient and daunted by the prospect that either was beyond my abilities, or at least my willpower. Willpower in particular enchants me as notion- triumph of the will, hachimaki, fasting, malaise, and all gradients upon the scale of will and effort fascinate me, and I can usually pinpoint exactly to what degree I have the megrims, the fervor, or whatnot.  In general I am plagued with a lassitude, which of late I decided was the Yukkuri, and to be embraced.

Hence tea, tranquility, and the easy life.

These sudoku plans were a great relief, since they meant never really having to work, and I was free to enjoy life as suited me- the ingestion of culture and the activities of the leisure class academic.  However,  became quite fascinated by the idea of the JET program- it seemed on the 22nd so easy, so within my grasp, that I became quite sure I could get in, and use it as a means to get my foot in the door and live a life in Japan. I had become convinced this was the route to something worthwhile and lasting self-sufficiency, and it gave me a sense of purpose and plans for the future that had been absent for about a year. So, sudoku is off the table. What isn't, though, is the leisurely, tea-and-cake life. I want to read literature, play games, watch anime, and avoid work.

This can be discussed since it is the past; I wouldn't imagine discussing my suicide plans here on languish. In the event that I do off myself though, i'd post on languish first. It's only fair to chronicle the final dissolution of my family here, as I have made note for each preceding family member.

Edit: one unfortunate consequence of shelving plans of immediate immigration to Gensokyo has been a corresponding lack of willpower to work on the sonnet project, though..

edit edit: It's a little constraining that I can't tell languish everything i'd like to. I'd prefer being more open, as this is an internet community i've known a very long time and is a close-knit group, and I don't have many other people to talk to. But it is assumed I am crazy, putting on an act, or nonexistant as it is, so..

Recettear is actually a neat game, mechanically speaking.
Title: Re: Fortune Summoners!

Recettear was great. Eight hours in, I can say Fortune Summoners is as well, contrasting with Chantelise. It's hard, though.

Also, Recettear brings something to the table for people who don't like metrid/castlevania sidescrolling, in terms of gameplay; this is much less novel. If the charming setting doesn't appeal to you, it is unlikely the fairly traditional gameplay will.

(Not to say the gameplay is bad, and it might well be novel for some of you who avoided your sidescrollan JRPGS in your youth. )

I'm not looking for any kind of Japanese doujin game.  I'm wondering about the game play of your current Japanese doujin game.

Are there good and bad things to say to angry ribbiting Merkids?  Is it possible to fuck up the encounter and have something bad happen to your character?  Or can you say anything at all and they are still overcome by the power of My Little Pony Love?
Title: Re: Fortune Summoners!

There is combat, as previously alluded to. Actually, merkids are pretty horrible creatures, and are the reason I am currently stuck- there is a section in which shy little Sana must go on her own, for she has a magical stone that shields her when she is underwater, and she is responsible for going where her friend cannot follow. Without Arche, however, she is very easy pickings for the merkids, who beat her senseless.

Merkid magi spam ice attacks and run away. It's kind of disgusting. Mere ordinary merkids are not easy either- their spear gives them too much reach. Having been struck several times repeatedly without landing a hit back, the game marks you for a natural loser, so you drop your sword and cry like a proper loser, while they beat on you further. A wonderful lose more mechanic.

Years of interested study makes me more knowledgeablethan most on Mormonism. I'm not an expert. :) My decade-long fascination with Mormonism is why I went to Utah, rather than me having an interest in Mormonism after going to Utah out of the blue.

I cleared the Shrine of the Wind, where the Merkids were. Sana's difficulties were overcome by running and squealing until Arche could help her.

Sana is running a fever!  I am now heading to school to tell Ms. Sophia Sana won't be in, at her mother's behest. Arche was visibly depressed at the news.

This is Colm. He's somewhat rowdy, and leads the other boys in a secret clubhouse based in a cave out behind the school. Arche arrived at the school knowing fencing taught to her by her Father, who is something of a retired adventurer.
Colm seems to resent this, and is determined not to be shown up by a girl. It was a lie told by him that sent Arche out on her first quest, although Colm was unwittingly telling the truth, and so she succeeded in finding a magical orb, to Colm's dismay.

He has a hard lot in life, being a boy. But he sets about it with dash and a defiant determination, resolute in his refusal to be shown up by a girl. He is a boy of will and grit, and deserves laurels. A loveable rascal- doubtlessly he harbours some affections for Arche,
but I think these are destined to be frustrated by Arche's close relationship with Sana.

With the help of some medicine, Sana's fever has broke, and she has recovered. Arche was wracked with guilt that dragging her reluctant, tiring and crybaby friend into damp dungeons was why she was sick, but a grateful Sana did her best to alleviate these concerns.

Stella, a haughty drillhaired ojou, has joined the group of friends after some initial bristling, and I am confident she'd be Neil's favourite character.

Edit: Japanese names for their faux-european settings are quaint. The major countries of the known world are Scotsholm, Abyssinia, and Dalmatia. Our heroes are citizens of Scotsholm, which recently won a war against the foul Abyssinia, which is a desert land that lies across the great river Somali.

The class is all abuzz with news of a field trip to a hot springs. A mild-mannered girl with floral interests expressed concerns that Colm would peep; Sana agreed this sounded plausible, but Arche was unsure why one would peep at an onsen.

Arche, who previously struggled with counting to thirteen when unable to take off her shoes. She is the good-natured idiot protagonist, in the proud tradition of Goku.

The present quest is a voyage to the neighbouring city of Chartreux, where we hope to pick up taiyaki-flavoured sweet sticks for the upcoming field trip.
