WARSAW, Poland - A Polish court slapped a fine on a popular singer who bad-mouthed the Bible—the latest episode in which authorities grapple with religious defamation in a traditionally Catholic country that is growing increasingly secular.

Dorota Rabczewska, a singer who uses the stage name Doda, said in a 2009 interview that she doubted the Bible "because it's hard to believe in something that was written by someone drunk on wine and smoking some herbs."

A Warsaw court ordered her Monday to pay a fine of 5,000 zlotys ($1,450) for offending religious feelings.

The case comes months after another Polish court let off a death metal performer, Adam Darski, who tore a Bible during a 2007 performance. It deemed his act artistic expression.

Darski and Rabczewska once dated.

Er, wow.

Isn't Poland party to some EU law or other international law that prevents them from doing stupid shit like this?

That said, her statement was stupid.

Well, it was ignorant, in that the Bible has about fifty authors, I guess.

Also there being no evidence of herbs smoking while writing it.

I took that as metaphorical.  But then I took the single writer as metaphorical.  I don't think it's supposed to be a statement of fact.  You're being too literal.

I'm being too literal? You mean I'm actually paying attention to the few words that she chose?

Yeah.  If I were to say, "Paul must have been tripping acid on the road to Damascus," obviously I would not mean that literally; lysergic acid diethylamide was not invented until 1938.

Isn't ignorance a national trait of the Poles?

Sure but you can pare it to the based that the people/person who wrote it was drunk/high. Otherwise what is the point of the comparison? Just to suggest that they were crazy? You might as just well to stick to the fact that it is nonsensical and contradictory.

I feel that's what she meant, yes, and was using language figuratively to illustrate her belief.  I'm sorry it didn't meet your standards of accuracy. :P

In any event, by God, why are we arguing about this?  The more important point is that Poles are basically not much better off than Iranians.

Because you tried to suggest that it wasn't a stupid statement.

Yes, Timmay, because my America bashing is always accompanied by a total praise of the situation in Poland, especially when it comes to religious issues.

You fucking cretin.

This is sadly exempted. And it's not like the EU is the fount of freedom of speech anyway. Just try saying in Germany that Holocaust didnt happen or in the UK that muslims are terrorist pigs.

I warm myself by the expectation that when the secular side eventually wins in Poland through numbers, catholics will be shipped off to camps.

One would think all the railing against birth control and abortion would make the Catholics immune to this particular strategy. :P

Not really. This is about people turning away from catholicism, not about out breeding them. Besides, catholics are quite notorious for not following church teachings on sex. You guys constantly fail to grasp it's a cultural, not spiritual thing, in catholic countries.

I know.  That was what I was attempting to make fun of.  It is the same here except for the weirdos like Santorum.

Well tried, Doda, but you're not quite up there with Sinaed O'Connor in single-handedly destroying your career yet.
