The Wizards of the Coast people seem to think they're releasing software.  Hire some developers dudes... then you can justify these constant 'reboots'.

I suppose this is a fairly profitable model.  I never really got into 3E and never bought anything for 4E.  I wonder how much more they can fuck up the Forgotten Realms though.  Perhaps they can include a mechanic to farm gold, just to make it a bit more like WoW.

I will inevitably buy it, if for no other reason than to be able to bitch about it later.

Wasn't version 4 just a year or two back?
I remember AD&D v 2 was around forever. New versions are coming fast these days.

I have never been a big D&D fan. My entry into roleplaying was via Warhammer, which imo was a far superior system, then through GURPS into several other systems (Chaosium's, Storyteller and few others). So no, I won't be buying that shit.

They have to milk the tards.

At least White Wolf releases a lot of readable fluff in their books, so it is even fun to read when you do not intend to run a system. D&D is a pure moneygrabbing machine.

Yeah D&D used to be that way as well.  This has just been since WOTC took it over.  I thought they were right to do 3rd ed at the time but now it seems like the new business model: reboot everything every couple years.

There's quite an active Birthright PBEM community out there. I've run a game of two myself. :)

I played 3e and 3.5 quite a bit, running campaigns for my group. Never got 4e though, as I moved to WFRP 2e at that time. Of course, then they went and made a new edition of WFRP too, so it's a moneygrubbing machine too, despite what Marty says. And I've lost count of how many editions GURPS has had. :P

Well he is basically right in the sense that I suppose D&D, particularly the early versions of it, were terrible gaming systems.  I prefer it simply because I grew up with it.

But 2nd Edition was brilliant because of all the creativity with settings and so forth.  Birthright and Planescape and Darksun and the Asian settings (both far east and near east) were all really interesting.  I particularly loved Planescape.

From what I understand after talking to Kain yesterday, somebody at Wizards basically admitted they completely threw out testers' feedback for 4E, and are going to be doing an open beta this time around, so this has the sounds of damage control to my ears.

You a big Rainbow Dash fan?  Heh.  As to the actual topic:  meh.  My friends and I still play some variants such as Rokugon and Star Wars in terms of WotC products, but the constant reboots are definitely driving us away or toward older stuff.  While some of the changes are nice and even needed, overall it is simply too much to keep investing in new books.

If I was still playing I would get this.  What is the cost of this - $40?  You spend that on a video game that you may or may not like/play.

But this is the exact same game with slightly tweaked rules.  Only sports video game fans do that.

This is why I like Gurps.  The last version was from 2004 and they show no signs of changing again.  The change from 3e to 4e wasn't that drastic either, not like the complete overhaul between D&D versions.  Mostly smaller things like reducing the number of redundant advantages/disadvantages by making them more generic and streamlining some of the more complex rules. The rules for vehicles were notoriously bad.

I'm looking forward to it.

I enjoyed 4E, but about a year or two ago it reached a saturation point for me. Too many options and too much stuff all over the place, also it kind of required you to use the online tools that I personally didn't like too much.

4E came out in the middle of 2008, a little less than a year after they announced it. This time around they apparently want to do some consulting with people, so I think we can expect that 5E is at least another year out. If it comes out in the beginning of 2013 that'll be 4 1/2 year since the last edition. It's a little bit short, but not ridiculously short given the space between previous editions in D&D nor that of similar products - GW runs about 5-6 years between editions (40K is likely getting a new edition this summer).

So for my part, I'm looking forward to the new edition. I'll definitely get the core set and play a few games, then see where it goes from there.

I like Yakie's attitude with this. Why do people whinge about new versions so much though. I've realized by playing a bunch of systems in the past few years that the actual system you use is secondary to having a GM who can keep people interested and wanting to play. Good source material and campaign settings are far more important than whether you use AD&D THAC0 or some newer.

Currently I'm just starting a Pathfinder Adventure Path (Kingmaker) playing a Ranger (two sword path) and a Druid. I like Pathfinder. The settings are useful, and well written for the most part. Character creation is reasonably easy. Game play is as wonky as your DM is a rules lawyer. We've only done one session so far, but it was very fun.

I'm running a 3.5 game (I have loads of 3.5 books still) and enjoying the heck out of that, I also play in a M&M 2.0 game that uses a melding of "Aberrant", and "Call Of Cthulhu" settings. Also a hoot. Really good GM. It makes all the difference.

Rules systems are just that. More variety of style is a good thing.

Because WOTC is fucking with our childhoods.  AD&D was broken permanently when they started pushing out those asinine Greyhawk novels.

And besides, from what I've read about 4E there are so many more cleaner, simpler systems out there.  And if you want high-end numbers-crunching, there's better systems out there, too.

While I do not deny the existence of "D&D" novels, I categorically reject any connection between the game of D&D and the fantasy fiction put out by the various publishers of D&D.

4E, IMO, is probably the best system for playing with minis on a grid and having cool fights with cool powers. If that's not what you're up for, it's not the right system, but if you're in the mood for that then it's pretty good.
