RED WING, Minn. - Emergency officials are responding and two Wisconsin school districts have delayed their schools after reports of a leak at Xcel Energy's nuclear generating plant in Red Wing.
Xcel Energy confirms that operators at Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant declared an alert at 3:53 a.m. Thursday after workers discovered sodium hypochloride, commonly known as chlorine bleach, leaking from a tank in the screen house. The chemical is used to treat water that is brought into the plant for cooling.
Xcel insists there was no release of radioactive material, and assures the public there is no danger. No plant workers were injured in the incident.
A spokesperson for Xcel Energy says the sodium hypochloride leaked from a tank and is fully contained within a berm. An environmental crew is heading to the site to begin clean-up. The cause of the leak is being investigated.
Because of the leak and uncertainty surrounding it Still, the public school districts in Prescott and Ellsworth, Wisconsin have been delayed 2 hours until a decision can be made on student safety.
Dispatchers on the Minnesota side of the Mississippi River in Goodhue County say public schools in Red Wing remain open.
A hotline is now open regarding the Prairie Island incident. Nuclear Generating Plant, and the MN Department of Public Safety has activated its Emergency Operations Center to monitor the situation.
