Since I visited two new states this past week I figured that I would restart this old thread (I think the original was pre-crash, as I couldn't find it):
I left out Wyoming because as PDH will attest - I never stopped in the state but drove right through!
Yeah, I don't count states I've only driven in or flown over... I've flown over Kansas, Utah and Nevada, and probably Nebraska.

I know I've forgotten a state or two.
States where I've stayed for at least a day. I lived in New York and New Jersey so far for longer periods.

Well I'm not sure why flyovers would count...but I could see how someone could count a car drive. Wyoming is about 6 hours to drive through.
Drive-throughs don't count.
And more importantly:
Drive throughs count. The only drive through that possibly shouldn't is Mobile by way of NO. If I ever get my ass over there again, I will make a point of stopping for a few hours.
No, drive throughs and flyovers don't count, bro. I'm in charge and I make the rules, and abide by my own rules: the last time I did this I didn't count West Virginny nor Delaware since I'd definitely only driven thru WV and couldn't remember ever stopping in Delaware, but since then I've spent 3-4 nights in WV and visited Lewes, Cape Henlopen, and Rehoboth Beach in DE.
Quote from: Barrister on October 16, 2011, 09:38:57 AM
And more importantly:
Why do you hate Quebec? Is it because of Viper? Fair enough.
I've only been to states that form straight lines between South Carolina and Louisiana and South Carolina and Maryland, respectively. Oh, and Tennessee.

Fuck you. I don't play by any stinking rules.
What constitutes a "stop" anyway? Is it enough to get out of your car for a piss? In that case I didn't drive-through Alabama. :P
Left out states I just drove through without significant stops, or just spent time in an airport.
What if you stand in one state and from that one piss in another?

I flew into Phoenix, ate at a Burger King, and flew out. That counts. Also, I flew into Charlotte, defecated, and flew out. That would count, but I've been in North Carolina several other times (Cherokee, Waynesboro) so didn't need that visit to count North Carolina. :)

You could go to 4 corners and let your piss splatter in 4 different states at once.
Meh. You've seen one you've seen them all.
The maps are a bit misleading; they would be in my case since; in order of time spent
California - 4.5 years
Missouri - 1 month
Wyoming - 1 week
New York - 6 days
DC - 2 days
Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania - less than one day.
The discerning mind will observe that I lived in California as a kid and made a trip to Yellowstone, a few lay overs in New York, spent time with family friends in Kansas City, Mo. and made one cross country trip across the continent stopping for an extra day to visit the Smithsonian. For me, at least, such a map makes no sense. I'd rather see a weighted map with time actually spend being represented as size or color to avoid the confusion over if crossing the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles beelining from New Mexico to Kansas with the AC turned off to avoid the smell counts as visiting those two states.
How do I make this map?
I'd explain it, but you'd need a degree in timography to understand it.

You should take a big chunk of vacation time (minimum 3 weeks), and drive to San Fransisco, and then on the way back swing south through SoCal, Texas, and Washington DC. You will then have a respectable map, and have completed the great American road trip.

AmTrak?
States I haven't been to using Cal's rules:
Alabama
Alaska
Arkansas
Iowa
Kansas
Maine
Minnesota
Nebraska
North Dakota
Oklahoma
Rhode Island
South Dakota
Wisconsin
But some are a real stretch. I've been to Charlotte and Mississippi for 1 day each for work, so does that really count as a visit? I've spent the night driving through Kentucky and New Mexico. I would add those states to my list too (not Charlotte because that isn't a state though).

 Everybody I know from New York or New England who has visited one or the other has marveled at how *huge* Connecticut actually is, since it takes more than 80 minutes to cross the state. As a kid I remember thinking the trip from NY to Waterbury was a transcontinental expedition and we had to stop probably 5 times. In terms of space and time alone, being uprooted from NY to Stamford was so traumatic. Forty. Five. MINUTES?!? :o :weep:
EDIT: Crossing Pennsylvania at night for the first time as a 19-year-old was a stark revelation at the vastness of this dark continent.

I think this is why native New Englanders are useless. I went to Providence on a date once.
New Englanders are not to blame for your choice of dating venue.
I had a fabulous time. :)

:) It is 45 miles to the next town (and no, there is not much in between) one way, 100 miles the other way. In Garbon terms that is 30 minutes of Wyoming travel to the east, 65 minutes to the west.

No Territories.

You're missing out on the best part of Canada.

A native New Englander would never do that. Going to another state is a total day trip for us.
Thanks, I-95. :)
Doesn't matter. Asking a Rhode Islander to drive to New Hampshire is like asking them to go on The Long March.
If it's more than an hour away it's too far.
I know I've said this before but...
in Yukon I've driven more than an hour to go for lunch. I've driven and hour and a half in order to go for supper.
Hey beeb, have you ever considered doing a reality show?

I would like to see Beeb chased by that Mantracker guy.

They did a couple episodes in Yukon.
The "wild" that they were in was mostly within Whitehorse city limits.
I went somewhere between the two rules. I didn't count it if it was just a pit stop or I was only in an airport. If I went sightseeing or met someone there then it counts.
