Title: Canada to arrest G.W. Bush
Post by: viper37 on October 12, 2011, 01:24:45 PM
Not gonna happen. :P
But it's Amnesty International's deam though.

Quote
"Canada is required by its international obligations to arrest and  prosecute former President Bush given his responsibility for crimes  under international law including torture," said Susan Lee, Americas  Director at Amnesty International.
"As the US authorities have, so far, failed to bring former President  Bush to justice, the international community must step in. A failure by  Canada to take action during his visit would violate the UN Convention  against Torture and demonstrate contempt for fundamental human rights."
I find the claim dubious, about Canada violating the UN Convention against Torture.

But anyway, let's assume, for the sake of the argument, that AI is 100% right.
If this was Gadaffi arriving in Toronto, what should Canada do?

Do we have to do all the investigation, search for witnesses, do the inquiries as with a normal criminal trial?  Are we supposed to arrest the person of interest and detain that person until the trial, and if found guilty detain them for all the duration of their sentence?

Amnesty International continues to reinforce my opinion that they are a total waste of space.

There is no need to conduct an investigation, President Bush's systematic and pitiless abuse of the English language is matter of public record that cannot be contested.

Naw, the performance of the Vancouver Police department was less than stellar.  Protestors were assaulting people who were attempting to enter the building to hear the speach.  The police effectively did nothing.  The people who were assualted have however commenced civil proceedings against their attackers.  I suspect that many of the protestors are not part of the "99%" and likely come from families with money...

That's not war crime.  It ain't war crimes when it's done by socialists.  They call it re-education.  Totally not the same.

Cut 1 billion from you defense budget and then declare that you will attempt to arrest a former US president? Talk about relying on US good will.

In Norway they call political actions like this "indremedisinske" (Internal medicinal). Purely designed for the simple purpose of satisfying some disaffected local political constituency without having any (probably) real effect. This was done to make Canadian Bush haters (that's all of them except Neil iirc) feel good about themselves.

It's like when my local council discussed boycotting Israel. The process proceeded fine when they thought they were just going to have to avoid Jaffa Oranges (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffa_orange). But when one of the [urlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%B8yre]Conservative[/url] representatives pointed out that if they were going to boycott Israel they'd have to boycott Intel and Cisco Systems as well; basically stop using computers and the internet; the proposal died in committee.

Viking, did you you miss the fact that Canada is not going to arrest Bush? Rather some small group is suggesting that Canada ought to, as a means to draw attention to their various issues.

Admittedly, the thread title is a bit misleading.

Why arrest him? Just assassinate the guy Obama-style.

Especially since there hasn't been a good concert of note under their auspices in many a year.
