I use both Chrome and Firefox.
Chrome is lighter and faster for most sites, but I still prefer Firefox's interface and add-ons.

one snag... after turning it off, when it reopened it hadn't saved all my bookmarks and passwords etc that it had so flawlessly imported from ff. kinda lame. I'd hate to have to do that every time.

Use Lastpass (https://lastpass.com/index.php).
It will work with Chrome, IE and Firefox.  Use one master password, keep it logged in, and you'll never have to retype your passwords again.

The one with the least fine control over popup blocking, where you have to completely kill popup blocking to allow something through?  No thanks.

Chrome Beta seriously takes on Firefox by adding support for extensions.

Same here.  Well there was one time that a Firefox patch made everything just not work and I switched to Opera for a while.  But eventually they sorted out the trouble or something else happened and I forgot what it was and I found myself using Firefox again.

I've finally given up on Firefox. Default at work was Chrome and been using that. At home today, I was tired of how slow Firefox seemed to be going (/I know a few of you mentioned something about that with regards to the latest versions) and downloaded Chrome.  I actually feel like I have highspeed internet again.

I'm a recent convert to Chrome as well.  Firefox annoyed me one too many times with its rapidly deteriorating performance and stability, and I gave Chrome another try.  Haven't looked back since (except once, to retrieve my stored passwords).

OK, I'm going to give this a go as firefox is slow and resource intensive and I downloaded Lubuntu onto an old netbook and Chrome on that seemed to be fine.

I'm still using Opera as my main browser, open all the time, but need another program to do crap stuff like click thru revenue etc.

It takes a while for Google to download all of your private info it wants, it quickens up pretty good after that is done.

Giving Chrome another spin, because Firefox is just too memory-intensive to justify any more, but Chrome still jumps me to the top of every web page when I post, rather than returning me to the thread where it leaves off.  I don't see any way to adjust that behavior.  That's pretty much an app-killer as far as I am concerned.

Anyone know how to fix that?  Is it even possible?

It scrolls you up to the top of the page after you post?  What about when you reload the page?  Either way, I can tell you mine doesn't do that.  Very strange.

My little netbook went into slow down mode a couple of hours ago, so I had a look at the task manager and there were two googleupdate.exe running, a setup task
and one connect to some IP address.

So I killed those and when looking for details.

People might want to know that when you install Chrome, it sets up googleupdate.exe on you pc; apparently it's buried in the T&C.

Also if you look in scheduled tasks, google has set up four without explicitly asking for permission, two of which appeared to be hourly (I may have mis-read that).

I just need to run msconfig to get rid ofthe rest of this googleupdate 'feature'.

So I think I'm going to abandon using Chrome and uninstall it.   :hmm:

One thing I'm not liking about Chrome currently is that sometimes, if I leave it open for a bit, it starts spawning several copies of its processes. If I like in task manager I'll see like 15 copies running at 30k in the memory. Kinda odd and similar to how Firefox would have 1 spawn but running at 1mil.
Title: Re: Chrome got better.
Post by: Arvoreen on August 09, 2012, 03:01:14 PM
I believe that is part of Chrome's 'sandboxing'.  It allows a page that sucks/would otherwise kill your browser to only kill a tab or 2, instead of the whole thing :)

As for the update features, Google has designed it to be continually updating.  Once in a while, you may see a icon overlay the wrench in the upper right, letting you know you should restart Chrome to pick up the latest updates.  (No installers to download and run, etc.)

Kind of obnoxious as I essentially have to kill it all off to continue to use it. Else, it cause my pointer to move so slowly (and pages to load similarly) that I want to scream. -_-

I started using Chrome, in fact am using it now.

It seems pretty nice, but not polished. Like the cursor does not consistently change to a pointer when you go over a hyperlink, or sometimes when you click on a link, it starts loading the new page, but doesn't actually show that it is loading the new page.

Well it's a lot better than IE7, that's for sure.

Think I'll stick with Safari at home though, Mac-side.  For some reason Safari Windows-side always hangs up on me, but IE9 isn't bad.

I've been playing around with Chrome for Android.  It's in many ways better than the default Android browser or the Dolphin browser.  It's faster, syncs with your Chrome desktop version bookmarks, and has some other features in common with the desktop version.  But it totally screws with font sizing when browsing Languish.  Quoted text appears huge, while other text is too small to read

Yes, very annoying. :P

Also, it has tendencies to freeze up when you input text. It'll be a good browser in a few months.

Something either with Chrome or with HBO Go is fucking up.  When I click the full screen mode while I'm watching something, the "Press ESC to exit full screen mode." message never goes away now.  Don't know what the deal is.

This is on my desktop.  On the laptops hooked up to the TVs, it hasn't done this.

When I download things I prefer to download them to my Desktop, as they are usually things I am going to do something with immediately, whcih worked fine with Firefox.  I switched to Chrome recently, partly because of this thread :), and it doesn't work very well.  Most of the times the files don't show up at all on my Desktop and will seemingly randomly show up at various times later on.  I don't have any problems when I download files into a folder.

Anyone have any ideas?

Settings - Advanced settins (bottom) - Downloads

There, pick the directory of your choice, in your case Desktop.

Btw,  for all the Chrome afficionados out there, I'd recommend Commodo Dragon, based on Chromium.  More secure, but for Windows only.

I know how to set it up to download to my Desktop, it just didn't work right, but thanks.

Specifically I was downloading multiple HiS turns.  The first time a ~2/4 showed up on the desktop immediately, the other 2 randomly appeared a few minutes later.  The next time they didn't show up at all until I exited from a game, then only ~3/4 were there.  The last time they didn't show up on the desktop at all until I restarted my PC.

I've given up on Chrome.  Whenever I try to type anything into the address bar it can take like a minute to even start registering what I've typed, let alone finish it.  Not having any problems with any other app including IE (which I have to use for some work apps).  So I am on Firefox now and it's working great.  I tried a bunch of stuff to try to fix Chrome (manually deleting cache files, etc.) and nothing worked other than like as an extremely short-term remedy.

Internet Explorer is the way to go  :bowler:

Chrome's definitely become much more of a sluggish beast recently than it had been previously.  When you say problems with videos, are you talking in general or YouTube in particular?  Because YouTube's had something in the past few weeks that makes it almost unusable with seizing up if you try to advance to a point farther along than the buffer progress bar.

It's back as of this morning.  Back to Firefox.

I still prefer Firefox.  I. Am. Loyal.  ;)

Loyalty to technology seems silly.

I occasionally have issues with videos loading.

This is a persistent issue for me. Has to do with Flash Player, it seems.

I have the video issue now :(

Altho, when it happens its because of unsafe scripts, there's a shield in the omnibar you can click & load it anyway.

yes, it is, in most case.  Hence the smiley.  I just always prefered Firefox over Chrome, even when Chrome was the shiniest thing out there and FF the fat lady no one wants to dance with.  It just seems more customizable than Chromium based browsers.  However, I find Chromium based software to handle Youtube better and have better extensions for the site, hence I use Comodo Dragon for this, and a few other things.

Chrome pisses me off sometimes. I wanted to install an adblocker on one of my two computers at home. (Don't wonder why, I just do). And lo and behold I see that it's also installed on my other computer. It does that a lot with everything. I guess it's using my google account to tie the computers together, right?

Yeah one of my work programs followed me home that way (web of trust). I'm guessing such things can be managed in sync settings?

Well, and that's the other thing. Anybody can get on my work computer and see what I'm surfing at home. [makes note to remove chrome from his work station]

 Log out of your Google account at work.  Problem solved.

Yeah you can be logged out on Chrome but still be logged in for things like Gmail.

Alternatively, don't have history as one of your synced items.

I don't know about Chrome, but in Comodo Dragon (wich is supposed to be nearly the same), you go to: "Settings", "Advanced sync settings..." (just under "sign in"), pick "Choose what to sync" and select whatever you want.  If you don't want anything to follow you, just don't sign in into your Google account.

Doesn't anybody know of any trick/extension to stop those annoying video ads that start playing automatically upon loading a page?

Doesn't AdBlock handle those? I haven't seen any at least.

Yup.  AdBlock handles most and has a context menu option to catch the ones it misses as well.

Try Ghostery as well.

Thanks, I wasn't aware I could "teach" adblock to get the ones it misses.

I'm confused why it isn't more popular, but also glad. I'm pretty sure if everyone went down that road we'd lose a lot of free content. :P

Seriously, I got aggressive about teaching it when the girlfriend's late grandfather got to where he was calling me every two weeks about viruses- he fell for almost every piece of clickbait he saw, so I had to treat the cause as well as the symptoms. ;)

Nah, just the clickbait ads showing up in Chrome.

I recently changed to µBlock instead of AdBlock because it supposedly blocked tracking cookies too. I was alarmed to see that most sites use at least 4-5 tracking agencies. :O

if you use disconnect.me and Ghostery you'll see just how many of these things they use.
