Poll
Question:
What do you wear for work?
Option 1: business/informal (suit and necktie for men, perhaps cufflinks)
votes: 2
Option 2: business casual (suit, no necktie or cufflinks for men)
votes: 5
Option 3: smart casual (dress trousers, dress shirt, leather shoes, blazer for men)
votes: 10
Option 4: uniform (soldiers, police, hospital workers etc.)
votes: 4
Option 5: blue collar (work clothes for heavy or dirty work)
votes: 3
Option 6: casual (this is basically defined as "not one of the other categories")
votes: 22
Well?
I can't really describe women's dress styles. I know what it is when I see it, but I can't define it in English.
I guess I'd be smart casual to casual (actually this job is pretty casual as long as one "fancy" item appears), although when I was strictly smart casual, we didn't call it that. I didn't know daily suit without tie was an option.
Smart casual, except no blazer shit.

Casual. If I want to smarten it up I'll wear some sort of shirt, though never ever would I be caught dead in a tie.
One of the rookies had watched too many of those American sales movies with the smartly dressed stock brokers too many times and showed up the first few weeks in full on dress-suit. I wish I could've seen him crawling around on the floor taking measurements of filthy cabinets in that getup. :D
He didn't last long.

*edit* it's just unfortunate that you like pink :P
Anyway, I always wear a suit to work, but rarely wear a tie. While it isn't really necessary as I work in IT and a lot of my colleagues come in casual clothes, I do notice that you are perceived differently by coworkers and people from other companies. And I work in a conservative company's headquarter, so people wearing business attire are everywhere. That and I actually like wearing suits.

The bear label is a big deal because of the gay community.
I used to have to wear a suit/tie here downtown when I worked for a rather conservative-minded bank. Walking to/from my car and at lunch was a horrible experience-- the panhandlers here see a suit & assume you're loaded.
When I left to work for my current company a couple blocks down, I was able to switch to business casual. Now we're casual (i.e., jeans). The bums leave me alone, which is ironic since I'm now making twice what the other place paid me.

I've done jacket and T-shirt, but obviously never to any sort of formal thing (and it's only really doable about four months out of the year). In any job I can imagine I'd stay with, I'd likely wear a suit, or at least shirt + tie.
Depends on the circumstances. Very rarely dress up if I'm meeting unknown, potential clients. Blue collar stuff if I'm in the field, with safety equipment (boots, hardhat, vest, goggles, etc) thrown in as required. At the office, whatever the hell I want, usually a T-shirt and whatever trousers I find laying around when I wake up.
Whatever I want.
It really depends.
To a meeting with a client almost exclusively a suit, a necktie (usually with cufflinks) except when a client expressly requests an informal meeting.
To the day to day work, usually a suit with no tie, or a button down shirt with more casual trousers (e.g. khakis or dark jeans).
totally casual. I shave like once or twice a week, wear whatever I feel like wearing.
Pretty much what I want.
Once happened to be in the building's elevator on a Friday. I was wearing a rock shirt and a pair of jeans. Woman came in the elevator from another office and looked at me and said, "I guess you have casual Fridays too". I didnt' have the heart to tell her, that was standard uniform for me.

It was fine for a while, but started to get old having to iron shirts, have my suits dry-cleaned, shine my shoes, etc. I like dressing up on some occasions, but 5+ days a week sucks.
One odd effect, having worked under pretty much every type of dress code, is that how I dress for work tends to dictate what I change into when I get home & want to relax. For example, when I wore a suit to work I'd often change into what would typically be called business casual or smart casual at home. When I was business casual, I'd wear jeans at home.
Now when I get home from work & I'm wearing jeans, I sometimes feel like I can't relax until I change into shorts & sandals.

Jean + Company issued shirt.
It's not mandatory or anything. Most of my co-workers wears t-shirts + shorts. It's just cheaper.
Khakis, polos, occasional button-down shirts. Office casual for the blue-collar crowd or IT, basically.

My old job I was pretty casual. Jeans + collared shirt, with a suit hanging on my office door to change into when going into court. Largely because I felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb wearing a suit in and around Whitehorse.
(Of course if you REALLY want to stand out - try wearing full barristers robes in Ross River, Yukon)
But in Edmonton, I've done a complete 180 and wearing full suit to work. And I like it - there is a sense of power in wearing a suit.
Ide, I think some people complain about suits because they're a hipster douchebag who thinks not wearing a suit is sticking it to the man. Or, they're wearing an ill-fitting suit. And a poorly fitting suit (in particular a tight collar) is very uncomfortable to wear.
I don't understand the attraction of button-down shirts. If the collar is stiffened (or however it is called in English) I don't see the point. And I would never wear a shirt with a non-stiffened collar at work.

I buy iron-free shirts, so I just pay $2 in quarters to wash a whole load of shirts and pants (and another $1.75 to dry them). :nelson:

Some of the guys wear blazers, but that is entirely optional and self-imposed. I met with the CEO yesterday and I didn't bother to put one on.
Dress shirts, and business pants (part of a suit).
I work in IT support, and most people wear suit and tie. I get away with not wearing a tie and a business jacket because the government now encourages everyone to do away with those so that the temperature of the air con can be raised.
My father used to wear cufflinks all the time. I wanted to save money so I didn't buy any. Turned out almost no one wears them at work now.
Usually smart casual sans blazer, unless it's a clinic day. Then we have to wear ties. :yuk:

There's three levels of casual here, which can basically be described as "anything other than jeans", jeans and "anything goes". I do the first Mon-Thu and the second on Fri, though there's no official restriction on jeans during the week. "Anything goes" would be sweatpants, shorts and flip flops etc. as only sported by internet nerds.

No. Laundry service is usually an Asian thing, though it's mostly just white people in my area. But yeah, I have a place close by that charges around $2 per shirt. Problem is I rarely think about having my shirts professionally cleaned/pressed until it's the night before.
I had a part-time job as a bank teller in college and frequently had to iron a shirt after going out drinking. I used to impress my friends with my ability to perfectly iron a shirt without burning myself while pissed drunk. I tended to use like a half a can of spray starch due to my aim being so far off, but I got the job done.
I don't even think to ask my wife to iron my shirts, since I've always just done it myself anyway. But that always causes her to catch shit from my mother in law when she's in town :D
Full suit with tie and cufflinks (I hate suits without a tie).
Most people who complain about wearing suits, I find, have never worn one that is, along with the shirt, properly fitted to them.
That said, right now it is 'dress-down August' where I work, very much appreciated because public transport is unbearable in summer in a suit, and my office does not have air conditioning.
