My Droid is getting all squirrely on me. Stupid thing is just randomly activating the screen all the time.
So, I am looking for a new one - hopefully I can convince Verizon to let me upgrade early.
Anyway, criteria:
- Price. I would like to not have to spend $200 on a new phone. I might have to, considering what I want, but if I can get away with spending less, that would be ideal.
- Screen. I want one of those big ass screens. Like the 4.3 inch ones that seem kind of common on the current Driod flavors.
- Battery life. My Droid now seems to need to be charged constantly. Would like to not have that with a new phone.
- I do want a pretty modern phone, with the current generation of hardware and features.
Options
- iPhone 4. Its an iPhone, right? However, it is expensive, and is it really better than the high end droids that run around the same price? Not really sure.
- Thunderbolt. Sure looks purty. Expensive though...
- Motorola Atrix. Big screen, saw a glowing spooge review. Don't know much else.
Anyone else know much about this market? I am kind of a "learn about it when I need a phone, then promptly forget because there is no way I am buying another phone until I have to..." kind of person.
Why do you need a smartphone?
Because I like doing the things that a smartphone lets me do.

Which are?
I'm a canuck & since I don't enjoy getting ass raped monthly by big cellphone companies, I don't have a Smartphone, I do not know nor understand the appeal of those thing.
I have internet at home, I have it at work. Do I really need it in the inbetween?
You know, I don't really want my thread to be a debate about the merits of smartphones in general. I am ok if you don't want one.
The Motorola Atrix is out of the running. Looks awesome, but is ATT only.
My Droid is likewise starting to really show its age, plus some of its basic shortcomings are starting to grate on me. I too have problem with charing it; I used to go a whole week between charges, if I used the phone moderately. Now I need to charge it every day, and twice a day if I'm in an area with poor reception.
I too am curious about what my options will be once it's time to upgrade.

Alright. Get dumbphone & save!
or alternatively the New Google Nexus?
I'm a luddite when it comes to phones, but even I find smartphone to be very useful. You don't realize how often it's helpful to have e-mail or Internet on the go until you have it.
The Samsung Galaxy S II gets very favourable reviews and looks like the best one on paper. After you go AMOLED, you don't want to go back.
Limiting it to Verizon phones here...
If price weren't a consideration, I'd recommend the Samsung Droid Charge. Has all the bells & whistles and includes a 32gb micro sdhc card, but is $299 *with contract*.
I'd also recommend the HTC Thunderbolt, which is similar to my beloved EVO 4G. But that is $249.
If $200 is your limit, go with the Droid X2 or Droid Incredible 2. Or be a traitor & get a 16GB iPhone :P

How is that even possible? You can't have a mouse on your smartphone, and the cursor is an extremely annoying tool to use to select anything.
Well, it looks like I am pretty stuck with something that is going to cost $200. Since that is the case, I am actually thinking about the iPhone.
Although now that I've seen things like the Droid x2, the iPhone seems kind of...small.
GF, I am coming around to the smartphone set. I haven't had any mobile phone for 5 years, but was given the latest Blackberry at the new job. I have been texting, emailing, and even web surfing far more than I ever thought I would. And I imagine a smartphone that is actually good would be even better.
Ended up getting the Driod X2. Almost got talked out of it by the sales rep, who wanted to sell me a 4G phone.

Please post your impressions of it once you use it for a while.
I recently got An Iphone 4 from work, and IF you are actually using the phone part of it, then don't go that route.
I've tried all sorts of phones over time, and this is absolutely the worst phone from a pure phone functionality point of view. Even the most basic phone functions are limted or none existent compared to my regular private SonyEricsson.

I think they still have touchscreens, but you can pretty much ignore it on some Blackberry smartphones if you're so inclined.

Dual core 1ghz processors = ossum. How is the battery life so far?
Very good - it hasn't dropped below 50% with daily use.
So far I very much like the phone. The screen is excellent, the UI is so much better.

Seems I'll be getting one with the new job, but here in small denmark they are virtually unknown and I have no ideas of their capabilities, pros and cons.

That's a Blackberry Bold. Blackberry makes a halfway decent PDA and is okay for browsing HTML websites and keeping your email with you. Biggest weakness is that RIM's OS make it worse than iPhone in terms of web compatibility.

No shit. If I'm making a simple post it's not the end of the world, but for any post involving splitting quotes, posting pics, etc. it's more cumbersome than it is worth doing. Which is I guess why some forums are using specialized apps now both browsing and posting from mobile devices.

What's the current hotness for an Android phone with a physical keyboard?
I think Princesca and I are going to get smartphones soon. My current phone is ok (Sony Ericsson w760), but I'd like a new toy. I have my corporate Blackberry, but Blackberry kinda sucks now and I feel weird looking at Facebook and shit on it even though I know they don't care.
I recently got a sonyericson neo, in fact I'm writing this entry on it. Rooted it an got rid of all the annoying sonyericsson stuff. Liking it alot so far.
If you're looking for a dirt cheap androidphone I can recommend the ZTE Blade. My girlfriend got one almost a year ago, perhaps there's a newer model out now? Don't expect it to run hd-material without a stutter but for everyday use, some facebook and web browsing it's perfectly ok. Had I not been so impressed by her phone I would probably have not have gotten a smartphone myself.

I'm with AT&T now, but I could be convinced to switch.
I'm with AT&T too... was looking at the Samsung Infuse 4G earlier. Unfortunately I live in a rural area and can't get 4G at home (from any carrier) but I can get it in town with no problem. The question in my mind is: do I jump ship to Verizon because their 4G network is supposed to be so badass? My brother (who works for T-Mobile) is encouraging me to do that.
Really want to get the samsung galaxy 2, but looks like Verizon isn't going to offer it. Any news on when the Droid Prime may come out?
LG Optimus V with Virgin Mobile. $55 a month for unlimited everything, or $35 a month for unlimited data/text/email and 300 talk minutes. My plan is $25 a month because I got in before the price hike. I have been mostly satisfied with the phone's performance and service, although sometimes it is slow to do texting through the basic texting app. The phone is a mid-range Droid phone and is $150. No contract.
Princesca wants us to get Atrixes instead of Infuses. Is the extra cost worth it? :hmm:
l'LL have to replace my Droid soon. It is an original model, and going to crap. Droid X or something I guess. It'll be in December when the new every 2 comes.
Still got my old HTC Hero. About to go Galaxy S or Droid X. Stupid cellularsouth.
Working on a Motorola Citrus right now (the phone's actually quite decent for those of us who aren't app-crazy). S is on a Galaxy S Continuum; the Fascinate seemed like it had some problems that would just piss us off too bad.
Ok, this Atrix is pretty badass. Tell me some cool shit I can do with it PLZ. The Latitude app is like a billion times better than the one I have on my Blackberry.

I'd have a lot of sympathy if you hadn't just spent last weekend travelling with an NFL team.
My first impressions: 4G LTE is shit. The shit, that is. I get 9 mpbs down speed and 3 mbps up speed. That's not too far off my cable modem speed. The phone itself feels very light, almost too light. It has the size and weight of a thin power bar.
Battery life is a little suspect, though: without me doing much of anything, the new battery barely lasts a day. Given the rate of deterioration of the phone batteries, that spells trouble in about a year's time.

I will become more interesting to stalk in the near future, when you will begin to find me in such places as Denver, Charlotte, Phoenix, and various points in LA metro (Santa Barbara, Newport Beach, Burbank).
One thing: I've got my phone set up to pick up my home wifi, and there's a corporate one at work (not my company, the one upstairs) that I appear to be able to leach off. Yet, my phone still seems to want to pull data from the 4G network even though it says it's connected to the other wifi networks. :hmm:

When Sprint first unveiled their WiMax 4G in Cincy I was getting over 10 down in some cases. Seems like I'm rarely able to even get 8. That's not a big deal in & of itself, but for some reason my 4G signal seems to be weaker recently. I used to get a reliable 4G signal at my house, and now I have to stand next to a window upstairs to get any 4G signal.
I have a feeling Sprint is going to abandon WiMax altogether for 4G & do LTE like everyone else. They abruptly stopped the WiMax rollout a few months ago, and have been making noises about testing & implementing LTE.
QuoteBattery life is a little suspect, though: without me doing much of anything, the new battery barely lasts a day.
That's pretty much a fact of life with a current-generation smartphone. There are probably some tweaks you can make to save battery life (most of which I hate because they make the phone less useful to me). Otherwise, just get in the habit of keeping it plugged in when at work, in the car, etc. Or buy some extra batteries to swap in when needed.
QuoteGiven the rate of deterioration of the phone batteries, that spells trouble in about a year's time.
I have to say, my Evo's original battery does not seem to have degraded much in the year I've used it. It may help a bit that I rotate a couple generic batteries in (a necessity since I tend to use my phone pretty heavily).
If you happen to want to replace the battery or keep a backup or two, do not buy from your carrier or any brick & mortar retailer-- they will rape you on the price. I bought 2 generic batteries plus a wall battery charger for my Evo for $12 shipped on ebay. Radio Shack sells the exact same battery (and just one of them) for about 50 bucks.
YMMV, but the two generic 1500mAH batteries work just as well as my OEM one that came with the phone.
Yeah, buying phone accessories from your phone company is like buying an HDMI cable from the same place that sells TVs.

Amazes me though when people who ought to know better go & do just that.
I really like the improved alarm app on my new phone (not sure if you can get it separately on your own). The old alarm was so so easy to accidentally turn off in a sleepy haze. The new alarm app requires that you truly be awake and coordinated to shut it off.

Definitely, but a couple things to bear in mind:
It has 16GB of internal flash memory for storage, which is awesome & all but there's no micro-SD card slot, so you won't be able to expand beyond that or swap SD cards. That may not be a big issue for a lot of people, but personally I prefer having flexibility to expand/swap.
Also, while it's still quite capable today, the single core 1GHz processor will be a little outdated within the next year or so. Again, this may not be a huge issue to a lot of people, but I would think app developers will start (or already have started) developing apps with the new dual-core mobile processors in mind. If you have to sign on for a 3-year commitment, I'd probably do some future-proofing & go with something that has a dual-core processor.
Hmm, ok. They also offer this one:

Ditto, though it seems like some Android smartphone manufacturers are doing a better job than others at getting the latest version of Android out to their phones (though sometimes the holdup is at the carrier). HTC, Motorola & Samsung seem to be better at this than others.
But I don't see differences between 2.2 and 2.3 to be a dealbreaker.

I want to get a decent 3G and GSM 850/900/1800/1900 unlocked phone before I go overseas, and would rather not pay out the ass too much. I've scanned Amazon.com, but I don't want to get burned on a $200+ lemon.

Dunno if they'll have any way to tell, but if you buy a used phone make sure it has a clean ESN number. I would imagine that pawn shops are full of stolen or "lost" phones.
Ebay is actually an excellent source for used phones. Not sure if they require the seller to mention the ESN status, but pretty much all reputable sellers will mention whether or not it has a clean ESN.
I don`t get the logic in buying a second hand smartphone. Surely the thing with smartphones is you get them on a contract from a supplier because you need a data plan to be able to afford to use them.

 It makes sense if your current contract has not expired and you need to replace a broken phone that can't be replaced by the warranty (and you don't have some sort of equipment protection plan). Your carrier is not going to do you any favors in this case, other than 'allow' you to pay the ridiculous off-contract full MSRP for a new phone.
Also makes sense if you're traveling somewhere your current phone will not work, and you're only going to be traveling for a few weeks or months.
Plus, some people just hate the 2-year commitment. Which then means their options are:
*pay through the nose for a new phone with decent specs,
*get a more reasonably price but lower spec new unlocked phone,
or
*get a dirt cheap used phone
And in my case, I'll be overseas for a year and will likely travel a lot in the future, so I need to get an unlocked phone I can slip SIM cards into.
I've found pretty cheap used phones on eBay, in particular iPhone 3s and Samsung Galaxies. Both ~$200. For new phones, I'm partial to Sony's Xperia X10 mini pro, which is $360. I think I'll go for one of the used phones, and hope I don't get ripped off.
A friend has the Motorola Defy, which at least here is pretty cheap. Word is you have to flash the BIOS to get the most out of it. It's durable, waterproof, shock proof, and guaranteed in cold weather.
Anyone have experience with the LG P500 Optimus One?

iPhones have an insane resale value. It's common to "make" money on the difference between the subsidized price you paid and what you sell it for used a couple years later.
And don't confused subsidized prices that carry 2 year commitments with no-contract prices. You're paying $550 and up for an unsubsidized iPhone 4.

Damn. My droid is dying and they won't let me have an early upgrade. So.. what will be hot, great, and not expensive in December?
Some nice Windows Phones from Nokia should be out by that point. I really, really like my HTC Arrive.
Windows? Hmmph. Never considered those.

WP7 has a lot of cool features (Xbox, Zune, Office, and probably the best mobile email client for exchange servers), but it's way too locked down for my tastes and it's the least mature of all the major mobile OSes. The freedom you have with a rooted Android phone is just too addictive for me to be able to give up. I just wish they offered a non-phone WP7 device so I could have my cake & eat it, too.

I wanted to get a Samsung Galaxy 2 or iPhone 3GS initially, but they're out of my price range.
The LG P500 is ~$170 on eBay. Probably fell off the back of a truck.
My brother got a Samsung Galaxy S II (or Sprint's awkward name for it: "Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch") and all I can say is ME WANT. The specs are probably overkill for now, but won't be when Android 4.0 is rolled out to everyone. I'm stuck with my Evo (Supersonic to the rest of the world) until October 2012.
Wife is eligible for an upgrade. The Galaxy S II would be too much phone for her, so I'm looking at either the Evo 3D (not for the 3D but for the dual core processor) or the Nexus S.

One man's lack of freedom is another man's "thank gods there's finally a consistent user interface across applications". :D For hacking and trying unusual things, I have a computer. When I'm on my phone, I want ease of use, consistency, and a UI that's thought *all* the way through, not just stopping at the front door of the app.
So apparently I registered my samsung account with a .com email instead of .dk, which cannot be chanced in anyway without doing a complete reset. Bleh, I was wondering why I weren't getting any android updates.
In other words, don't be a tool when starting up your samsung phones. :P
The software updates were well worth the complete wipe.
I ordered an INcredible 2.

I'm looking very intently at this phone, which would be my first "real" smartphone. I'm not sure if I should stay with AT&T, jump to Sprint, or buy an unlocked model, though. I'm enticed by Sprint's unlimited data, but I've heard the quality of their network is well behind AT&T and Verizon. What's your experience with them?
I've not had problems with Sprint's network in my area.
Sprint is pretty awesome in Cincinnati and pretty much any decent-sized city I've visited the past few years. You should be able to find a coverage map on their website. I'd look specifically at their 4G coverage in your area.

Ended up getting her the "Epic 4G", aka Samsung Galaxy S (the first one). Rooted it for her so she could remove the annoying Nascar app & other Sprint crapware. I love the AMOLED screen, but it kinda bugs me that the pixels seem so small. Colors & black levels are much more lush than my Evo's LCD screen, but to my eye at least the Evo looks higher resolution, even though they are both 800x480.
I know this would propably be ignored, but I need advice on a REGULAR pjone.
My youngest is nearing the age where he (and most importantly we) can get benefits from him having a phone. I greatly desires one for christmas, and mostly an Iphone. Seeing he is only 9 that ofc is out of the question.
His big brother is happy with the regualr soneEricsson 880i he got back when he was 10 (An old office phone) and I would think something similar would do for hte youngest.
But, he ofc expects it to have games a galore, like smatphones do, and that isn't really so for most regular phones anymore.. or is it??
I'd prefer him NOT to get a Nokia, but I'm open to suggestions.

I would suggest getting him a cheap Android phone, with data turned off (except for wifi). Not sure what is available in your area, but around here we can get unlocked/no contract, brand new (if a little low spec) Android phones for around $100. That may be too much to spend on a phone for a 9-year old, but there are a ton of free or cheap games available on the Android market. If games are of any importance to you or him, this is what I would do.
I think most non-smartphone handsets are a bit lean on games these days.
FWIW, my 3-year old has his own phone now-- a T-Mobile G1 not connected to any service. I can download games for him from the Android market via wifi and that's all he cares about :D
So, I got me a Galaxy S2. The second or third thing I tried to do was connect one of my Bluetooth headsets, both of which failed to be recognized. How do I figure out if either of these headsets is actually compatible with this phone? Same question applies if I need to go buy a new one.
Update:
Figured out one of them. I wasn't doing the pairing correctly.
I'm getting a Acer Liquid E that's been sitting in a box for a year.
How technologic of me.
My Atrix continues to be awesome.

So does my HTC Arrive. I am interested to see if by the time I am ready for another upgrade Windows Phone has made significant inroads or whether it has been largely shut out of the competition. That'll determine whether I get another Windows Phone or switch to a Sprint iPhone at that time.
I picked up an HTC Thunderbolt today. It was tough to justify the $150 for a phone, but I wanted something to reward myself for all the overtime I worked in December.
It's my first smart phone, and only the second moblie phone I have bought myself (most have been provided by my employer) so I don't have much frame of reference to compare it to anything, seems pretty good though so far. I haven't played around with it too much yet.
