Two QB's gone in the top 8 picks, including the #1, a draft year when there probably isn't a legit first-round QB to be had. Ugh.

I'm liking it even more the more I read about this guy. They're talking about being able to have Watt, Williams, and Smith out there at the same time, with Williams at the OLB spot (also with Watt as a situational NT between the two, etc). Very useful player, it seems.

Man, I dunno. The Brownies got like 6 more picks out of that, including another first next year (? IIRC). And damn, if they needed a huge fatguy, and it sounds like they did, they really really got one.
Yeah, they pulled in an immense haul for that number 6 pick. I was a big fan of that. Real big. I just thought that drafting who they did when they did and how was silly. I don't think anyone else would have grabbed him in the ensuing 6 picks if they were truly obsessed with drafting him. Losing a 3rd rounder this year, and the earlier of their two at that, is not a good move when they have as many needs as they do. I'm pretty sure they have this new guy and Rubin for a DL right now. That's it. I'm really hoping Holmgren and Shurmer pull out some amazing shit, but I have a bad feeling about it. I would much, much rather have stayed with Mangini and his plan which seemed to be making some progress, if not necessarily paying of W-L dividends yet. Now yet another foundation is blown up and they're starting over yet again.

Yeah, I don't think that I've ever seen a time when there were so many teams that need QBs. But, that's largely because there just haven't been many NFL caliber QB's coming out of the college ranks the last few years. Actually, in some ways, this is probably the strongest QB class in a while--but mostly in terms of quantity, not quality. Basically, there are a bunch of guys who could develop into quality NFL starting QBs, but they all have significant downsides as well, and none of them are clearly ready to start.

I don't know, Newton
could be great--maybe one of the best ever--his upside is really that high. But I see him as very unlikely to reach that upside. His downside, BTW, which I also see as very unlikely, is that he's the next JaMarcus Russell. Most likely scenario--he's the new Richard Todd.
LOL Belicheat in a suit.
Farewell Carson Palmer.
49ers took Kap too. What's up with all the QBs going so early? I figured another couple rounds before they started dropping in earnest.
Dalton and Kap were both thought of as possible 1st rounders and rounding out the 6 best qb's and I'm sure as soon as Dalton was picked the Niners ran to trade up to make sure they didn't miss out.

Watt won't be unless they get rid of either Smith or Williams or make him the starting NT. Reed
might be a starting OLB, but I don't really know what they're doing with that outside of Ryans and Cushing. Harris would have to be starting instead of Quin, who they would move to S, I guess. It would be the same situation as last year: a rookie and a 2nd year CB starting.
Edit: From what I understand, Smith has been kinda bitchy about being in a 3-4, so they might be looking at getting rid of him. vOv

I understand that he's versatile, but he isn't going to be taking the starting spots from either Mario Williams or Antonio Smith if they're on the team, which means it's either starting NT or moving into one of their DE spots if they get traded/moved to NT (Smith maybe). They might also take an NT with one of their remaining picks, or in FA (and they do also have some DTs who may be able to take that spot on the roster right now). But yeah, as of right now, it's either NT, or rotating in.

Two more DBs and a backup QB for the Texans now. I recognize the QB (Taylor Yates from UNC), but not the other two. Rashad Carmichael from VaTech and Shiloh Keo from Idaho. Keo seems to be...well....slow. I know the 40 isn't everything, but he ran a 4.75. Shit Watt ran a 4.84. I wonder if he was hurt or something.
Anyway, unless they make some deals, they've got two 7th rounders left to pick and they're done.
I have now hit draft and Trent Dilfer overload.
But at least I saw where Homan (Beeb will be pleased with that one) and Rolle ( we have any Eagles fans here? Any Santa pummellers?) went.
Thrilled with the Bucs draft outside their last pick. That one...makes little sense. Bowers is great value, the LBer covers them on losses this year and brings a little more upside at the unit. The first TE is an ideal #2 with upside long term to replace Winslow. Safety is another high production guy that is very average in physical looks but with a chip on his shoulders should be fired up to prove people wrong. Another power back as well as another sleeper corner late. :yeah:
Lions just makes little sense. It was like they were drafting for another team. Sure on paper the players should be about ranked 8-18th in value for this draft but man fitting them into the team will seriously limit the upside for several years. DT will just push a solid young #3 DT to the bench fully, WR is ok since one was needed but too high for just a complimentary WR. The HB is also good value but the trade cost them their 4th rounder which should have yielded a decent LBer/CB. Developmental LBer ok...but they need 1 now AND another 1 in the future so the dire need of today is still there. 7th rounder...meh seems like a poor fit. Too many decent DBs show up in the 7th round to go after a long term project OLineman. Just odd draft... :hmm: :hmm:

New England Patriots Hold All 32 Picks in the First Round of the 2016 NFL Draft; looking to trade down.
The usually boisterous crowd at Radio City Musical Hall sat in stunned silence as commissioner Goodell announced the first 11 picks in the draft all at once. "We decided to go with a new defense this year," said Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, "With the first 11 picks, we found our guys." The fans perked when it was announced that the Jets traded up to the 12th spot. However their spirits again fell when they learned that the deal sent the Jets 2017 and 2018 first round picks to the Patriots. "We did our homework and couldn't believe that guy's footwork," said coach Rex Ryan, "we got ourselves a great Tight-end for years to come." The Carolina Panthers, sitting at 33, were hoping that Heisman quarterback Tim Exley would fall all to way to the top of the second round. "The Pats already have 5 quarterbacks," Panthers new head coach Jake Delhomme said, "so we don't expect them to take any in the first round." The Patriots waited until the 32nd pick to take the Heisman winner. The Panthers front office took the pick as a personal affront. "They could have taken him at 1 or 14 or 26, no, they had to give us hope before they fucked us in the ass," Delhomme said. Within hours, a trade sent Exley packing to Carolina in exchange for Carolina's first pick in the next three drafts. Near the end of the first round, the Patriots became desperate to trade back as their roster ballooned well past the 80-man limit. They sent the 29th pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the Dolphins playbook and a 12% ownership stake in the franchise. "All in all it was a pretty good night," said Belichick, "a lot of guys fell to us."

Only guy from Rice taken this year. Congrats to him.
I like the Texans draft overall. They hit need positions or potential need positions with every pick: DL (1st rd), LB (2nd, 7th), DB (2nd, 4th, 5th), QB (5th), and an OT (7th). The OT, I assume, is if they're unable to resign...uh...er...Butler, I think it is. The QB is presumably so they can shitcan Dan-O in favor of someone not utterly worthless.

:yeah:
Heh their last pick is local kid, who walked on at Idaho and ended up semi-finalist for best TE in Country 3 years later.
Unless he is also a long snapper it seems an odd pick. But meh maybe he turns out to be really good. They have found good players in the 7th recently a lot oddly. Probably to make up for no value in the 5th and 6th.
Al Davis continues to be... special. I'm just happy we got two players before doing the usual "fastest guy in the draft" pick. Ugh. I'm hoping that the grabbing of a TE and a few DB's doesn't mean Nnamdi and Miller are gone. That would suck. A lot. The Browns seem to have pulled off an ok draft overall. I've been stuck at work all day so I haven't gotten to read much on either teams' picks yet.
Non-Draft item, but still a nice article on why Ray Lewis is awesome:

On September 1, 2007, Appalachian State shocked the Michigan Wolverines (and the rest of the world) by beating them, 34-32. On April 30, 2011, Appalachian State (Daniel Kilgore(notes), Mark Legree(notes), D.J. Smith(notes)) shocked the Wolverines again (Jonas Mouton(notes), Steve Schilling(notes)) by beating them, 3-2, in draft picks. Some teams just have other teams' numbers.
I'm shocked! Shocked!

Berkut will be the first to tell you it's just an act, as you'll notice she drowned her kids, not stabbed them. :bigberkutrolleyes:

Will you ever get over that?

I have. Berkut hasn't.
Draft pick Jimmy Smith gets the law.
QuoteAnd he was welcomed to the team by Ray Lewis, who called him on Saturday. "He just welcomed me and set me straight on how the team is going to be ran," he said. "He is the boss, as far as on the defense."

I'd really like to see a lot more data points before I put much stock in this.
