Title: How good is Netflix?
Post by: viper37 on April 23, 2011, 05:48:20 PM
How good is the quality?  Is it as good as a Blu-Ray?
If I have the choice between downloading the torrent file and using Netflix, wich will provide me with the best viewing quality on a HDTV?
How good is the selection?  Do they have all of the most popular movies & tv series?  Browsing the catalog while not a member gives me only a few titles, not so recent...

The price is okay, I don't mind paying, so long as I have unlimited internet access here.  But I'm worried about the quality.  I tried tou.tv , the free internet service for Quebec tv but I didn't quite like the quality of the stuff.

EDIT: What BB said.  Only streaming here, so I'm interested in your toughts on the streaming portion of Netflix.

?

Netflix has both a streaming system and option to have dvd/blue rays sent to you.
But from your question i gather only asking about streaming, the choice amongst HD quality choices is small but ever growing.

Netflix only just came to Canada.  Streaming only.

I find their streaming selection rather limited as far as new releases go. They have T.V. series that are pretty good.

Really? I find their new releases catalog to be better than their backlog.

I'm a fan, I split it with my sister-roommate.  Only downside for me is subtitles (I oddly like to have them on whenever possible) as they don't exist for most titles and are often mis-synched when present.

Viper, I'm not certain that the titles available in Canada are the same as those available in the US.

that was gonna be my next question, if you guys get same titles.

For new stuff it seems mostly tied with the Starz networks.

The selection in Canada is far more limited than in the US.  I am a subscriber, but mostly just for TV shows.  You can burn through the selection of watchable movies fairly quickly. I will probably cancel my membership soon.

Netflix does a decent job on its new releases for streaming;  their backlog is getting filled, finally.  But it's not weak enough to make any film buff steer away from it, as it's only getting bigger every week.

duh!  I didn't account for that.

Oh well.  I'll keep torrenting the good tv series then.  Local DVD rental isn't that good.  And they barely have any Blu Rays.

If you're looking for specific movies to watch, their online collection will leave you wanting more than not. But if you're just looking for movies that seem worth watching, their catalog is plenty to keep you busy. I have over a hundred movies in my instant queue and it just keeps growing.

I am very happy with Netflix, but I also get movies in the mail, typically the newer releases I'm more interested in.

Watch out.  The TV industry will probably get Netflix kneecapped by the CRTC.

I fear you might be right.
Too good to last long.

Netflix is amazing, even though it lacks in streaming new releases, both movies and TV shows.
For example, the biggest movie of the year, 13 Assasins, the last Taakashi Miishu movie, is not avaliable.

They are adding every week.  Not sure what the delay is in implementing all the titles they have in the US.  Probably the same IP problem with only having limited download rights for electronic books even though the paper versions are easily bought in any bookstore.

Netflix is awesome.  Since I refuse to buy that stupid-ass Ponyo movie, it's the only way my kid can watch it 200 times in a week.  He figured out how to browse the Xbox 360 Netflix interface, so I have to keep an eye on him.  I caught him watching some Beavis & Butthead episodes on Netflix the other day.  Couldn't bring myself to turn it off, though.  I do put my foot down when he wants to watch South Park, though.

We do the 2-disc at a time thing but really get our money's worth with streaming.  We can access our Netflix account on both Tivos, both Xbox 360s, and our PCs.  Only thing missing is Android support

I love netflix. I've been streaming a bunch of Mythbusters episodes. They don't have all of them available to stream, though, only ~100. Hopefully they'll add more from the DVDs that are already out.

I'll have to tell my son that. Then he'll set up our Xbox 360 to watch Netflix on, and I can watch my shows, too. :D

Netflix, I think. Amazon shows up in thier website at 2104 movies and some TV shows. Mostly British TV so far. At least it has Monty Python and Blackadder.

And 20 seasons of MISTER ROGERS.

Dropping netflix here in 2 weeks when they double the price, and was considering trying out the Amazon thing.

I was testing out my new Sony SMP-N100 box(59.99@best buy)* and the free Crackle service is pretty fucking good. The selection is limited(Sony) however. It has Three Stooges and NewsRadio at least.

*I don't give a shit about how much better your Roku, Boxee, AppleTV, etc.etc. is.
