Question:
Which was the most legendary warship in history?

Anyone who knows anything about naval history knows that these are the candidates for "the most legendary warships in history" but the conundrum remains: which of them is "the most legendary?"
Enterprise has the most "opposite number" silhouettes painted on the superstructure, at 2.5 (Akagi, Kaga, and half of Hiryu) in the most decisive naval battle in history, but that's because all of Warspite's opposite numbers fled faster than she could chase them.
Warspite has 14 battle honors, Enterprise 20 battle stars.
I'm inclined towards Warspite because I am an ABC fan ("It takes three years to build a ship; it takes three centuries to build a tradition - the Navy will go in") and he fiercely loved that ship, but I will listen to arguments otherwise.
Are you drunk?
Warspite was active in the Norwegian campaign in 1940, I believe and it thus gets my vote, since I am clueless. :showoff:
I voted Warspite mainly for the reason that she survived the last great dreadnought battle of Jutland, where Britain won the strategic victory at sea so desperately needed, while she also was there two decades later to pound the coast of Normandy as the great Allied Liberation effort began.
But it's a very close run thing with Enterprise for sure.
Victory. :frog:
Bismarck. :pickelhaube:
Warspite adds more to discussions on Languish, but he's never been in outer space. Gotta go Enterprise.
Warspite is a fine selection (what didn't she do!), but I have to lean towards Enterprise for its total score card. Every major operation in the Pacific, first on the offensive after Pearl, last flattop standing after Santa Cruz, and Doolittle to boot.
For sheer Brit balls, I go with the HMS Glowworm.
Enterprise had several famous starships named after her. Someone had to say it. So there.

This is an excellent thread, and a tough question. I could definitely see an argument for Enterprise. Her story is the story of the whole Pacific War, after all. She was the 'lucky ship' who got through it all, hardly slowing down when bombed or kamikazed, unlike the Saratoga.
I think I'm leaning a little towards the Warspite. For one thing, I'm a bit of a dreadnought partisan, and Warspite had the most dramatic role in the greatest dreadnought battle of all time. Narvik, shooting it out with the Italians in the Med, D-Day, fighting on even after the Germans wrecked X turret. She had a 26,000-yard hit on an Italian dreadnought, she was Cunningham's 'Grand Old Lady' and she resisted being led to the scrapyards at the end. She had a long and glorious history in a glorious age of naval warfare.
Are you sure that Victory doesn't rate a mention? I mean, these two have the most formidable reps since the adoption of steam, but Victory has to be the greatest warship of the wooden era.
Enterprise. anyone who votes differently is a communist and a pussy.

I'm not voting on this one, completely unable to decide :hmm:
I will second Neil though and say that Victory is the ship that comes to mind when I think of "the greatest warship". But that may be mere sentiment, Nelson was a childhood hero of mine.

Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds sucks.
It's "These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise", not "starship Warspite".

Yes. Victory did nothing special. Of course, it is hard to stand out when one sails in a fleet of dozens of ships, but there you have it.

Heck, Warspite isn't even the most legendary British warship of WWII. I'd put both the Ark Royal and the Hood at least ahead of her, maybe others.

I chose to use "legendary" rather than "famous" in an attempt to get past the fact that Hood and Ark Royal were more famous in their time, and Victory is today.
A legend is a tale told about something or someone performing in a "more than human" fashion. Not much to say about Hood as a warship other than that it died spectacularly. Informed voters aren't likely to vote for that ahead of a ship with many more battle honors.
You could make Ark Royal a write-in, if you'd like. That's certainly justifiable. Other write-ins are also possible; I just threw out few choices to start a conversation.

The Hood is most known for its long, successful career showing the flag in the interwar period, for being a very beautiful warship, for sinking the crappy French Navy and for a brief gun duel with the Bismarck ending in spectacular death. Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin are relatively well-known because they were German, and a large subset of WWII fans love German tech.
The Hood isn't too well known outside folk with a decent interest in history I think. Fairly well known but not the most legendary.
For legendary ships which lots of people know- Mary Rose, Warrior (despite the fact they did nothing), Victory, Ark Royal, Dreadnought.

I'm not sure that Ark Royal is in the same class as Enterprise though. They had some great moments, and the Bismarck chase was legendary, but Midway was not only legendary, but had a real and substantial effect on the war. Enterprise and Warspite fought the whole war long, and even the Hood had a glorious hero's death, but Ark Royal was murdered by a wretched submarine. It's cool that Ark Royal was involved in the first U-boat kill of the war and got the first British air kill of the war, but I just don't think it rates with the two choices in the poll.

Actually, she wasn't. She was in commission for less than 11 years (1944-1955) and then six years (1986 to 1992).
Warspite was in commission for 19 years (1915-1934) and then less than 8 years (1937-1945).
Enterprise was only in commission 9 years (1938-1947). Longevity goes to
Warspite here (though
Victory served 1778-1798, and then again 1803-1812, so gets the nod over any of the above).

I think a more innocuous part of it is that it's really easy to keep track of the entire German surface fleet in your head, and did so little that their few sensational exploits are equally easy to remember.
Anyway, of course I chose CV-6. Could it have been any other way?
I'd like to give an honorable mention to the Zuikaku, as probably the closest Japanese equivalent to the Enterprise, although necessarily less successful--she didn't survive, but she persevered the longest, and made a romantic if ultimately futile sacrifice, destroyed after being required to fight beyond all endurance and reason as the only fleet carrier in the decoy force at Leyte.
On the plus side for Zuikaku...

And I was suppossed to tell you that it actually means "Fuck that faggot dickless pussy fuck of CdM", but that I gave you the short version because I didn't want to hurt your feelings.
Anyway. The sign ain't nothing interesting. Just a Sa'ar 5 with an indepence day banner. "The Sea Corp best desires to the State of Israel". Well, we don't use capital letters in hebrew, and I'm probably wrong at translating "desires" literally, since in this case it means something like "wishes", and you doubtless gonna make a tasteless joke about the sea corp having sexual desires for the rest of the male population in the country. Also, the western media always translate "sea corp" as "Navy", even though the israeli navy, and the air force for that matter (air corp), are integral parts of the IDF and not a separate service as in the US.
At least the IDF probably doesn't have something wacky, like a "People's Liberation Army Navy Air Corps".
