Worth the bother nowadays ?
I could invite a few of my friends, not because I think they'd take to it or fit in, but because I past caring who sees what and it would save me some breath in explaining to people what Languish is about.
The problem I foresee is, in its current state, it's probably not that immediately attractive a place for newcomers :gasp:
Not that I've contributed much to its content, but in the early days and until a couple of years ago, there was a good range of subjects, some of the intellectual debates were genuinely interesting from an on lookers viewpoint.
Recently its got a bit narrower in the topics posted and the man, some peoples shtick is getting formulaic.
So is it worth inviting people, or better to accept for some of us it's no longer the place it was, not that there are any greener pastures out there.
I think you should go outside. :)
If the objective is to gain status by showing what a cool forum you belong to, probably not.
If the objective is to bring in people who will contribute to discussions, and they're the type of people who won't mind overly fending off trolls, why not?
Hey, invite 'em in.
The relevance of this place goes up and down with the news cycle.
Give it a try. This place needs new blood.

Good grief not the first, couldn't give a toss about status, but you're right languish once was at times/ has been a cool forum.
Yep, you've got to the nub of the question, I don't think its easy to find people who'll be able to cope with some of the trolling/ the somewhat weird initial hostility.
Look at Lettow, that lad must have some metal, to put up with some of the early hostility, not at all helped by his own political position, but now hes a somewhat valued member of the community.
Its just I don't see many newbies making that sort of transition.
I guess "who the fuck are you?" as a traditional greeting doesn't exactly roll out the welcome mat now, does it. ;)
Hey, all the friction keeps you sharp. Some people just don't want to deal with that, and that's fine. But it's not everybody. I see no reason why there aren't large populations of people out there who would fit in. It's not like we've saturated the market.
Hostility???

Largely, 50-50 men-women, a couple of ex-military, not a bad description.
I think, a few, more commas, are, in order.
What are the lurking rules of engagement these days?

Would new blood change that?
Between the racist shtick, the outright hostility and the occasional Siegy attack I can't imagine anyone new would stay. Which is kind of a problem.

You've said it yourself: formulaic. And it's not 'some people' - it's everyone who's been here long enough. We don't even pretend to be in earnest - we just go with the (portrayed) flow.
Why do you even give a shit about the well-being of this place?
G.
Sure, why not?

Actually, this could have more to do with the fact that Canadians are probably too polite to tell you how they really feel about you.
Can't we cruise the internet looking for vulnerable boards that are about to have an exodus and cunningly lure the exiles to Languish?
If we can get a bunch of new folks at the same time the board dynamics may be revitalized.

Sorry, some of us have real jobs.
Would new people be good? Yes.
But as said....getting new people is hard. The place isn't too attractive, its just a generic internet forum really, and we're very cliquey.
Just posts on other boards with links to languish in your sigs.
I've always thought that Languish is a bit like that movie Highlander; in the end there will be only one left standing and he will be immensely powerful
Fuck bringing in new people and their funny foreign ways. Fuck them all.

I've been thinking most of you are aliens for years. In some cases illegal aliens, but still.

It will be hillarious.

Hi
Rob has decided to invite all of his personal email contacts to have a look at Languish forum.
This is the place I've met a lot of my international friends and acquaintances, it's been going for more than 8 years and has been a great place for shooting the breeze, seeking advice and general arguing about angels on pinheads.
However due to a couple of recent database crashes and it moving server or some such tech stuff I don't understand, its lost most of the posting histories, so it's in need of an infusion of new blood, so I'm trying to drum up some 'trade' it doesn't cost anything, its a private forum, so you'll need to register to post, though I think you can still browse as a guest.
I post as jamesww, don't know why other than its one of my middle names, my previous user names died in the above mentioned tech calamities.
Unlike me, there are some very interesting people on the forum, from all sorts of backgrounds with a bias towards North America, though once the Euro and Asian contingent was larger. I think the only reason I'm there it to make up the stupid quotient !
Oops, almost forgot the url:
http://languish.org/forums/index.php?board=1.0
Anyway, have a look around and see what you think.
cheers
Rob H
You might have warned them of the high asshole quotient.
By that, they will come here expecting highbrow discussions, to be met with a rousing chorus of "who the fuck are you?".
We have high brow conversations... we just through in some vitriol to spice it up. You can only discuss the civil war so many times before it gets boring, but if you throw in some insults regarding a poster performing sexual acts on their own mother then the topic becomes entertaining again :D
Why do you talk about yourself in the third person mongers?
At the least should be a 'who the fuck are you' warning. We seem hostile to newbies but we're really not.
you probably should. the next time this place dies we will lose more, some of us may even leave before then.

Are you sure about that? Our "nuclei" of posters don't seem to be leaving when the board crashes.
NEW People??
I'm afraid... be very afraid! ;)
Sure, invite them in. The worst that can happen is if they don't like it here, then they'll severely mock you, and ostracize you as their friend!

That nuclei has been shrinking for years. And the effect is magnified the smaller the board gets. It's not just the loss of the poster that left, but reduced activity from other posters who interacted with that poster regularly.

Sure but I don't think board crashes really have much to do with it.
There were several that took the opportunity to leave when the old board crashed. A few popped in later(but not for long).
There's always a danger when a lengthy enforced hiatus occurs that some will realize they don't really miss the place.

So the last 34 people to register with languish have made a total of .... 83 posts, 53 of which were from Count and Zanza's replacement accounts. :hmm:
